Round and flat characters in selected short stories

Abstract

This paper about Round and Flat Characters in Selected Short Stories a way to find the method of characterization in 12 American short stories. The data of this thesis were taken from 12 Short Stories. This analysis was mainly aimed at finding out characterization, viewed from round and flat characters, then determined the function of characterization. This thesis was directed to answer two basic questions about characterization of the characters. They were 1) How is portrayal of round and flat characters in the 12 short stories, 2) What is the function of characters in the 12 short stories. The theory used in this thesis was taken from the book entitled Aspect Of Novel by E.M. Forster (1927) and Narrative Fiction: Contemporary Poetics by Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan and using formalism. His theory about round and flat characters and the function of characters was used to analyse the data source. The researcher also applied the other theories that are characterization theory. The data were analyzed descriptive qualitative. At the end of the study, discussing conclusions and suggestions is illustrated based on the research chapter
