Human biobanks are a valuable source of biospecimens and personal data to be used for research. Little is known of how many biobanks exist at a given Swiss University Hospital.

Special consideration will be given to those abstracts that focus on challenges in the area of biorepositories and solutions to those problems. Submitted abstracts will be evaluated anonymously by a review panel, and accepted based on scientific merit and contribution to their area of science. Accepted abstracts will be published on the ISBER web site and in their entirety in the Spring 2010 issue of Biopreservation and Biobanking (BIO) (formerly Cell Preservation Technology), the official journal of ISBER. Withdrawn abstracts may not be published in BIO. The Program Committee will attempt to honor the authors' preference but the final format decision will be based on the overall constraints of the scientific program.  No Preference - The authors do not have a preference for oral presentation, poster plus lightning round oral presentation, or poster presentation and agree to present their data in the format chosen by the Program Committee. Poster Presentation - Posters will be displayed for one or two days as determined by the Program Committee. Poster Plus Lightning Round Oral Presentation - In addition to presenting a poster, the author will be asked to ALSO highlight the abstract in a 5 minute oral presentation.  Oral Presentation – Authors selected to present in a Contributed Papers Session will be allotted 15 minutes to present the abstract. Complete abstracts must be submitted online no later than 11:59PM Eastern Time on Friday, January 29, 2010. No changes can be made to abstract content or authors after the submission deadline.  3. All abstracts must be submitted online. Faxed, emailed or mailed abstracts are not acceptable.  4. Each author may submit a maximum of two abstracts as first author and may be included as coauthor on up to five additional abstracts.  5. Once an abstract is accepted, additional authors cannot be added.  6. The Presenting Author should be the primary contact (or Corresponding Author)  7. Notification of acceptance or rejection and all future correspondence will be mailed to the presenter from the ISBER office by March 1, 2010.  8. The purpose of this survey conducted at the CHUV hospital ( >40’000 patients hospitalized per year) and the faculty of biology and medicine (FBM) at the University in Lausanne, Switzerland was a) to provide an overview of the number of biobanks, b) to assess their purpose and size, c) to determine the kinds of biospecimens collected and d) to analyse the extent to which the biobanks follow the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) guidelines on biobanks. Eighty-three services (FBM: 15, CHUV: 68) were contacted. Twenty did not respond, 35 had no collection of human biospecimens. 28 services had 37 research biobanks and 6 collections for diagnosis and treatment; the latter were excluded from further analysis. Fifty-seven % of biobanks store > 1’000 biospecimens. One third of biobanks stored tissue (92% fresh frozen, 46% FFPE, 31% DNA, 23% RNA, and 23% frozen cells), 65% stored blood components (58% serum, 63% plasma, 46% frozen cells, 38% DNA, 17% RNA, and 4% whole blood). The majority of biobanks have accepted the SAMS guidelines. Forty-one % of biobanks used the biospecimens and data only for their own research, almost half share biospecimens and data, but only a quarter use a material transfer agreement.  The data collected in this survey will allow biobank infrastructure optimization at the CHUV and will improve research support.   3 Confirmation of Submission -
