Abstract

We may well say that, compared with Marvell\u27s Ode , Milton\u27s Cromwell sonnet seems to be short of penetrating deep into our mind. When, however, we understand the ambivalent process of making the sonnet through the actual contextof his silent criticism against and obedient though unwilling loyality to Cromwell as his supreme master of the evolutionary regime, the heart aching of his grief will come up out of the inner lines of the poem. And the opressedlyricism of his mind will strike us with the signification of his high-minded way of living in the turbulent age. The Primary meaning of the poem is explicated through the contextual research of the age in which a poet lived. Thismeaning is a value that a literary study contributes to understand correlalives of men and the politico-social stratum which we have to live through
