It is the type of honor that not only recognizes outstandingachievements in working with young people and in attaining successin intercollegiate competition, but it also suggests the caliber ofthe institution and its programs.Members of the Physical Education Department at Cortland are onrecor~ as unanimously favoring the naming of the varsity soccer fieldin 'honor of Dr. Fred T. "Prof" Holloway, one of the-true giants inCortland's athletic history. We applaud the action of the CollegeCouncil in supporting this e~fort to permanently place Prof Holloway'sname on this facility which serves as the home playing field for bothmen's and women's varsity soccer teams.Dr. Holloway's fame in soccer circles was truly on a nationalscale. He was chairman of the original constitution committee of theNational Soccer Association of America and served as president in 1952.In 1958, he received the 16th Honor Award, the highest tribute theSoccer Coaches Association can bestow on one of its members. In gainingthe admiration and respect of his peers, he was acclaimed as "author,educator, l~ader of youth and leader of men, sportsman, athlete, coach,tireless worker and standard bearer for the sport of soccer."Dr. Holloway was one of the winningest coaches in collegiate soccercircles. In the 35 years he coached, his teams won 191 games, lost94, and tied 23 times. During his coaching tenure, Cortlandhad only two losing seasons, won five SUNYAC championships, appearedin three NCAA soccer tournaments when there was only one national tournamentfor all colleges and universities.More than just a coach, Dr. Holloway's professional approach asa physical education teacher helped shape the philosophy of the academicand intercollegiate programs at Cortland for four decades. Among thecourses he taught were physiology of exercise, kinesiology, foundationsof modern education, physical education seminars, and a host of physicaleducation activity courses. He also worked on many faculty committeesand was a close advisor to hundreds of students through the years.- 2 -Dr. Holloway has been retired for 14 years. At the advanced ageof 83, he is still very much interested in the College and stays intouch with former colleagues and many alumni. He has been honoredon campus and in the community. His place in the history of the Collegeis registered for posterity. His name on the soccer field would bea tangible recognition of his achievements and contributions in behalfof the College.
