After consultation with faculty within the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department, I am submitting 
the proceeding course proposal for review and consideration.  This course would assist students in the 
preparation for their internship.  Currently, students are going to the REL 403 instructor on an on-going 
basis to obtain direction and advisement as to the proper procedures required for their REL 403 
placement.  It has been determined that all of this information should be relayed to students as a whole 
during a seminar class.  This additional course will be added as a PRO course in order to be within the 
54-hour rule.   
 
I hope that you will approve this proposal as it will be an incredible benefit to both the students and the 
Recreation and Leisure Studies faculty.

Rationale for Changes 
One of features of the REL curriculum is a semester-long fifteen-week internship at one of hundreds of approved 
sites locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Preparing students for this experience is very time consuming 
since students attempt to meet with the instructor individually to go through the application and interview processes. 
This is not very efficient. A one credit seminar would bring focus to the myriad of professional issues that students 
will encounter as they make the transition from the classroom to the work place. 
 
Description of New Course 
Focuses on developing the professional competences of recreation and leisure students consistent with industry 
expectations. Examines professional career preparation including skills assessment, portfolio building and resume 
writing, internship application processes, interview techniques, college-to-career transition, professional ethics and

selected contemporary career building seminar topics. Requires students to host outside speakers, conform to 
prescribed dress code, and participate in professional organizations.

There is currently a one course release for the coordination of internships. Facilitating this course would be the
