Abstract

In the old cemeteries of Lithuania Minor a Lithuanian epitaph Czon / Czonai ilses / ilsis  Devieje / Deweje / Dewije / Dievuje was recorded with a varying form of Inessive Singular. The epitaph is a direct translation of the German one Hier ruhet in Gott (Here rest(s) in God). The article seeks to disclose the causes of the noun Dievas (God) stem mixing and to analyze its links with the German sources, as well as to examine the aspects of the German epitaph evolution.  KEY WORDS: Lithuania Minor, Western Lowlander dialect, Highlander of Klaipėda regione sub-dialect, epitaph, Inessive, Allative, morphology, stem mixing, animacy hierarchy
