Considerando-se a importância de comunidades bênticas na avaliação da qualidade ambiental, este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a ocorrência de poliquetas nereídeos bioindicadores de poluição orgânica, em duas praias com diferentes níveis de ação antrópica, localizadas a noroeste da Ilha de São Luís, Maranhão. Os dados foram coletados em formações de sedimento fino consolidado na zona entre marés, compreendendo duas coletas para cada área estudada. As amostras foram obtidas com auxílio de formão e martelo. O resultado revela a presença marcante de um maior número de indivíduos nereídeos no local de maior enriquecimento orgânico, um indício do forte grau de comprometimento da praia da Ponta d’Areia.Palavras-chave: praias, poliquetas, bioindicadores, Maranhão.AbstractNereidaeFamily (Polycheta) as Bioindicator of Organic Pollution in Beaches of the Littoral of São Luis, Maranhão - BrazilBeing considered the importance of benthic communities in the evaluation of the environmental quality, this work had as objective verifies the occurrence of nereids polychaetes as bioindicators of organic pollution, in two beaches with different levels of antrophic influence, located to northwest of the Island of São Luis, Maranhão. The data were collected in formations of fine sediment consolidated in the intertidal zone. Two samplings were obtained for each studied area. The samples were obtained with chisel aid and hammer. The result reveals the outstanding presence of a larger number of nereids individuals in the place of larger organic enrichment, an indication of the higher degree of compromising of the Ponta d’Areia beach.Key words: beaches, polychaetes, bioindicators, Maranhão
