Mike Tomaro ------, A native of Colombia, reedman, clinician, composer and arranger, JUSTO ALMARIO, has fused Latin, Afro-Cuban, South American, Funk and jazz genres into his own humble offering. Mr. Almario studied at the prestigious Berklee School of Music before a stint with Mongo Santamaria as the band's musical director. Justo has also performed with Patrice Rushen's Grammy Awards Orchestra, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Ayers, George Duke, Tito Puente, Machito, Dave Grusin, Ndugu Chancler, Alex Acuna, Abraham Laboriel, TOLU, Donald Vega, Harold Land Jr., Al Mckibbon, Master P, Bebe Winans, Queen Latifah, Charles Mingus, Chaka Kahn, Linda Rondstadt, Herb Alpert, Bobby Shew, John Heard, Lorca Hart, Billy Higgins and Jose Rizo's Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars. Always in demand, Justo's complete list of credits is simply too extensive to mention. John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bach, Bartok, and Debussy are among Justo's primary influences. After evolving from child pro-tege to virtuoso, Almario taught at the Henry Mancini Institute and has men-tared inner-city youth during workshops at the World Stage. A multi-instrumentalist of the highest caliber, Mr. Almario has mastered the soprano and tenor saxophones, clarinet, and flute. Justo thoroughly engages his listeners with rhythmic call and response interludes. Although he is extremely appreciative, this modest wind wizard frequently deflects any accolades, opting instead to thank folks for merely showing up and sharing. This is paramount to a keenly sensitive artist who warmly connects with his audience on so many levels. In 1992, while joining the ranks of Cedar Walkton, Terrence Blanchard, and Joe Lovano, Almario was an integral part of the Newport Jazz Festival Tour, produced by George Wein. Two years later, four of the recordings on which Justo was featured earned Grammy nominations, while Andrae Crouch's "Mercy," and Cachao's "Master Sessions, Vol.1" were actual Grammywinners. Mr. Almario was featured on" Let's Get Loud," a Jennifer Lopez DVD. He also appeared on "Ahora Si," a CD by Israel "Cachao" Lopez that garnered two Gram-mys. No stranger to Hollywood, Justo was heard on the soundtrack of the Oscar -winning film, Sideways. In addition, Mr. Almario will be featured on the upcoming Andy Garcia movie, The Lost City, and on the soon-to-be-released Romance and Cigarettes, produced by John Turturo and starring Susan Sarandon and James Gandolfini. Justo's ongoing involvement with Jose Rizo has proven to be very rewarding. This sizzling band recorded, "Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars, Volumes 1 and 2" and "The Last Bullfighter." He has also played on, and produced, TOLU's Grammy-nominated CD, "El Bongo de Van Gogh." Justo's latest CD, "Love Thy Neighbor," features his quartet playing original compositions as well as rare standards. A man for all seasons, Justo was the featured soloist with the Los Angeles Master Chorale at the Walt Disney Hall Season Opener, later performing at a "Celebrar" Christmas concert at the same venue. Justo cut his teeth living inN ew York before traveling widely throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Throughout Japan, Almario was a big-band guest soloist in such cities as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Finally, Justo's stellar career was recently celebrated during a segment of World Stage Stories, a comprehensive oral history series that chronicles the evolution of jazz. What's next for this pied piper with boundless horizons? No one is really sure, but one thing is clear-Mr. Almario's music will continue to heal and in-spire. A devoted family man, Justo's spiritual path nurtures both his creative journey and his warm compassion as a human being. Trumpeter PETER LOMAN was born on March 15, 1961, in Helsinki, Finland. He started playing the trumpet in secondary school and performed early with ama-teur Big Bands in the Helsinki region. In 1982, he began his professional career playing Cuban music with the Finnish band, Septeto Son and visited Cuba in 1984, 1986 and 1988, performing in festivals all over the Island. From 1984 to 1987 he played in the Espoo Big Band, performing in Hungary, Belgium, and jazz festivals in Antibes, France, and Montreux, Switzerland. Mr. Loman studied jazz at the Sibelius Akatemia in Helsinki in 1986 and 1987. Since 1990, he has performed in Santiago de Cuba with several popular dance bands. In 1995 he founded the group Los Cumbancheros, and since then he has been working as a bandleader and trumpet player. In 2003 Los Cumbancheros recorded their third CD, "Rompe hielos de Corazones," which includes six origi-nal compositions by Peter Loman; it was issued in Finland by OK Records. He has investigated extensively the history of Cuban Music and has had expositions on early Cuban Music in Santiago de Cuba and Havana. He has also worked as lecturer in conservatories in Finland. In November 2000 and November 2005 Loman visited the University of Richmond as artist-in-residence, teaching classes in Latin American Studies, Jazz, Spanish and Salsa. Distinguished trumpeter DR. MICHAEL DAVISON is a legendary performer, respected professor, published composer, and ethnomusicologist. Davison's love of music has shaped his life and career. He is in demand across the country as a classical and jazz performer and educator. As a performer, he has given jazz and classical recitals all over the United States as well as in parts of France, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, China and Cuba. Davi-son has recorded four jazz CDs as both a leader and sideman. His classical CD, Fenster, received rave reviews from the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Widely considered an expert in Cuban music, he performs and teaches Cuban music at the University of Richmond and worldwide. As a jazz musician, Davison has performed with the late tenor saxophonist and 11-time Grammy winner, Michael Brecker, popular jazz trombonist, Curtis Fuller and legendary Latin jazz saxophonist and composer, Justo Almario. He has also performed alongside some of Motown's most iconic singers and groups, including Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations and The Four Tops. As a classical musician, Davison has performed with Rhythm and Brass, a group that plays everything from Bach to Pink Floyd. He has performed with the Wisconsin and Whitewater Brass Quintets, the Roches-ter Philharmonic, Wisconsin Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the Richmond Symphony. Davison has performed for Pope John II and George Leonard Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury. Davison has published two transcription books on famed trumpeter Randy Brecker. Randy Brecker: Artist Transcriptions/Trumpet was published by Hal Leonard Publishing Company and The Music of Randy Brecker: Solo Transcriptions and Performing Artist Master Class CD was published by War-ner Bros. In addition to transcribing, Davison has also published jazz and Afro-Cuban compositions with Walrus Music. In 1986, Davison accepted a job as head of the jazz and trumpet programs at the University of Richmond. A respected scholar on Cuban musical styles, he has taught many courses on jazz and Cuban music since arriving in Richmond and was recently awarded the prestigious Educator of the Year award. His influence as an educator goes beyond the University of Richmond cam-pus. Dr. Davison also serves as trumpet instructor and head of the brass area at the world-renowned Interlochen International Arts Camp in Inter-lochen, Michigan. He hosted the International Trumpet Guild Conference in 1999 and is an Edwards Instrument Performing Artist. Dr. Davison, along with producer Ed Tillett, completed Cuba: Rhythm in Motion, a documentary tracing the musical genealogy between Cuban rhythms· and American jazz. The film premiered on the campus of the University of Richmond in 2007 and has been shown around the world, including Spain, Australia and Mex-ico. Dr. Davison is presently writing a book on Cuban folk music. SANTOS RAMIREZ is a percussionist living in Richmond. Mr. Ramirez, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, began playing bongos at an early age for the Orquesta Nangoa. He moved to Richmond in 1987 and was employed by Hewlett-Packard as a systems engineer until retiring in 2010. For the past 19 years, Santos has been the house percussionist at the West End Assembly of God church; he has been very involved and frequently per-forms in the area. Since 2002, Santos has taught and collaborated with Dr. Mike Davison and his jazz groups. This year, he has been involved with performing and preparing the Latin percussion rhythm section for UofR's CUBAN SPECTACULAR and upcoming Latin jazz concert with saxo-phonist Justo Almario. Santos specializes in Latin, Latin jazz, jazz, and world ethnic rhythm styles. A native Richmonder, CHARLES KILPATRICK started playing the piano at age 7. He is adept at several styles of music but has a deep love for jazz and Latin styles. Mr. Kilpatrick was the original pianist for local salsa group Bio Ritmo and recorded on the group's first three COs. Charlie has also played with Tim Reynolds & TR#, from the Dave Matthews Band. Currently, he performs locally with Tim baS on and Tropikiimba. He is a full-time musician and can be heard playing either solo piano or with various groups around Virginia. ALFREDO SANTIAGO, is an accomplished sax and flute player, singer, com-poser and arranger. A New York native, he was raised in Puerto Rico where he learned to play the saxophone and flute. Having studied with Mr. Freddie Miranda (alto sax player for the famous El Gran Combo of PR), he was a flute major at the prestigious Conservatory of Music of PR Pablo Casals. At age 20 he was becoming one of the top studio musicians in the island, · having toured with major Latin American artists Jose "El Puma" Rodri-guez at the internationally acclaimed Festival Vinas del Mar in Chile, and as back-up for La Lupe, Danny Rivera and Iris Chacon, to name a few. He has also performed with Puerto Rico's premier trumpet player, Elias Lopes, and his band. At the age of 22, he joined the Army Band where he spend 2 0 years touring the East Coast from Central Park, New York, to Miami, Florida, playing as principal flutist and lead alto sax. Since retiring from the Army in 2002, Alfredo has become the music director and wor-ship pastor of New Life Outreach.
