The Trinity Papers were founded thirty-five years ago, and the Faculty and Administration of Trinity College determined that they should be the responsibility of the President’s Fellows. We are proud to contribute to that tradition. Acting on behalf of their individual departments, a select group of Fellows participated in the design and editorial decisions. Each submission was judged anonymously, and the Editorial Board worked collaboratively in choosing the best papers to appear in the year’s edition of the publication. This year, the Editorial Board received many excellent submissions, and we chose seven exceptional pieces that represent the wide array of student scholarship at Trinity College. From Philosophy to Urban Studies, this collection’s diversity and intelligence represent the essence and scope of a liberal arts education. This year’s selections also include several papers that discuss Hartford, highlighting the academic advantage of Trinity’s place in the city. The editors would like to thank Ms. Nancy Horton for her indispensable advice, guidance, and assistance in compiling this year’s Trinity Papers. We would also like to thank President Berger-Sweeney for a wonderful year. It has been an absolute pleasure sharing Trinity with her for the past few years, and we were honored to be her 2016 Fellows. We believe that President Berger-Sweeney carries an excellent vision for the future of Trinity College, and look forward to seeing what the future holds.D E D I CAT I O NThis edition of the Trinity Papers is dedicated to the memory of Marjorie Van Eenam Butcher, Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus. Professor Butcher was the first female faculty member hired by the College in 1956, and was the first woman to be granted a full professorship by Trinity in 1979. She sought to, in her own words, “try to convey the elegance of mathematics,” and was an inspiration to the entire community.
