The North Central Risk Management Education
Center has been providing program leadership and
coordination for risk management education in the
North Central Region since 2001. This region includes
the following states:  Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio,
North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The
North Central Center is one of four Risk Management
Education Centers in the United States. The other three
centers are located at the University of Delaware,
Texas A&M University and Washington State
University.
These Centers were established in 2001 to provide
risk management education for producers to help them
develop knowledge, skills and tools needed to make
informed risk management decisions for their
operations.
In April of 2006 the four Risk Management
Education Centers sponsored the second National
Women In Agriculture Conference in St. Louis,
Missouri. This conference focused on educational
programs developed by educators for women in
agriculture and agribusiness. There were 155 educators
in attendance from across the United States. Educators
were able to take the information they received from
the workshops back to their respective states and
develop similar programs for women involved in
agriculture in their state.
The conference was well received and highly rated.
Some of the comments concerning what participants
found most valuable from attending were:
Making contacts and seeing what others are
doing in their area.
Sharing of resources/programs/tools that have
worked for fellow educators.
Ideas for workshops for our local conference.
The ability to see programs in action –
listening and questioning of others working
with this audience.

Each year the centers offer a competitive grants
program.  This program encourages collaboration and
partnering of public and private entities inside and
outside the region. The North Central Center awards
25–30 grants averaging $25,000 - $40,000 per award
each year. We have just finished awarding, over a five
year period, over $730,000 to 25 projects averaging
$30,000 per award. Anyone interested in developing
risk management educational programs for producers
is encouraged to apply for these funds. 
Each summer the North Central Risk Management
Education Center offers a training workshop for
people who are interested in risk management
education in our region. This year’s workshop will be
held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This workshop is
designed for project directors, state extension
educators and others in the North Central Region that
are interested in risk management education and
applying for risk management grants.
Our focus this year is “Building and Stocking
Your Risk Management Toolbox.” Al Prosch, Pork
Central Coordinator for the University of Nebraska
will be talking about risk management challenges and
designing your risk management toolbox. Darrell
Mark, Assistant Professor and Extension Economist
for the University will share how to plan and design a
risk management education project. In addition, there
will be a “hands on” grant writing session which will
provide guidelines for applying for a grant from the
Center. There are six criteria that a proposal must
address: 1) Results: The identification and document-
ation of targeted results for producers related to their
risk management education needs; 2) Verification:
Specification of how the results will be measured and
risk management behavior will be improved; 3)
Participation: The identification of the audience and
their commitment to participate; 4) Collaboration:
The collaboration with public or private partners
through existing or new networks; 5)  Innovation and
Creativity: Does the proposal show innovative and
creative approaches which build on the existing
knowledge base, materials and/or tools; and 6)
Applicability: Does the proposal demonstrate or
describe how the project and/or techniques could have
wide application? Each of the criteria will be discussed
with suggestions on how to address each one in the
grant proposal.
The goals of this workshop are to have public and
private institutions come together and share their
experiences in risk management education, assess
future risk management education needs in the region
and present information on funding opportunities for
the coming year.
The workshop is June 13–14, 2006, beginning at 8
a.m. on June 13 and ending by 12 noon on June 14.
