Lytle Indiana Daily Student William Rehnquist, the nomi-nee to be Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court might make his first public appearance as Chief Justice in Bloomington. Rehnquist, 61, will be present at the Law Library's dedication, scheduled for Sept. 12., if his Senate confirmation hearings are completed by then, said Bryant Garth, acting dean of the Law School. "As I understand it, Justice Rehnquist will be here unless his confirmation hearings interfere with the scheduling of the cere-monies," Garth said. President Reagan nominated Rehnquist for the position of Su-preme Court Chief Justice to re~ place Chief Justice Warren Bur-ger, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Rehnquist came to Washing-ton D.C. in 1969 to serve as an assistant attorney general in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel, which gives legal advice to all branches of government. He was named to the court two years later. "If he is here, it should be his first public appearance as Chief Justice," Garth said. "That should make it a very big and important occurence for him and for the law school." Rehnquist was invited to the ceremony by Craig Bradley, pro-fessor of law. Bradley served as a clerk under ·.:.· '~: :x-Rehnquist during the Supreme Court October term of 1975. Bradley said he invited Rehn-quist in spring before his nomi-nation to the Chief Justice posi-tion. The Supreme Court Justice is scheduled to itniveThursday night before the Friday dedica-tion and stay through Sunday. "He expressed an interest in attending an IU football game while he is here,'' said Colleen Pauwels, law school librarian and member of the dedication planning committee. REHNQUIST
