The call forparticipation formulated law as a site where globalization takesaspirational and institutional form, encounters critique andcontestation in distinctive ways, and shapes the practice of law as bothacademic discipline and professional art. The conference yielded excitingpapers and a highly engaging conversation--one result of which is thissymposium issue, entitled "Globalization and the Law: The NextTwenty Years."In the spirit of the occasion, we invited some contributors to earlyissues of IJGLS, as well as new participants, to help us take stock ofsettled, unsettled, and unsettling questions about globalization and law.We also presented panels on globalization from diverse internationalperspectives beyond the United States, featuring scholars from lawschools in Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, and South America.IJGLS was the first interdisciplinary journal specifically dedicatedto globalization and law. It is also one of the few law journals that ispeer reviewed; it has two editorial boards--comprised respectively ofstudents and faculty. As always, the Journal looks to develop themesthat are at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary scholarship on law andglobalization.The Journal's twentieth anniversary has occasioned manyacknowledgments as we felt renewed appreciation for the many studentand faculty colleagues--in and beyond Bloomington-who have madeIJGLS what it is today as a journal and as a community of scholars. Inthis context, I wish to acknowledge what I feel as a special debt ofgratitude to Professor Jost Delbruick. Professor Delbriick is the formerdirector of the Institute for International Law at the University of Kiel,Germany, and former judge of the Administrative Court of Appeals atLineberg. Already a renowned scholar, author, and teacher ofinternational law and German constitutional law when he joined theIndiana University faculty in 1991, Professor Delbriick played a crucialrole in helping to shape the IJGLS at its founding, and in informing andinspiring its interdisciplinary themes and directions.
