One of the fundamental goals of mobilenetworks is to enable and support seamless access andhandover for current and emerging services. To addressthe complex challenges of evolving network architec-tures along with the comprehensive needs of developersand users, novel mobility management techniques andsolutions are needed.With the popularity of new networking technologiessuch as software-defined network (SDN) and cloud com-puting, current mobility management protocols and ap-proaches may need to be reevaluated and redefined dueto various new issues such as location update, signalingoverhead, handover latency, security, and privacy.They could be addressed by intelligent features to in-crease the performance of mobility management.After a rigorous and meticulous peer review process,we have selected 21 articles for publication in our specialissue. All articles received at least three high-quality re-views. We group the accepted papers according to therelevant topics addressed, and present their proposalsbriefly below. We hope that this collection of articlesprovides a useful starting point for further research onintelligent mobility management and technologies in fu-ture wireless mobile networks.2 Mobility models and management techniquesMobility models and management techniques received alot of attention in this special issue. In “Modeling linkquality for high-speed railway wireless networks basedon hidden Markov chain” [1], Song et al. conduct fieldmeasurement tests of high-speed railway (HSR) wirelessnetwork link quality and they model the link quality usingthe hidden Markov chain. They develop an improved al-gorithm to simulate the variation of HSR wireless networklink quality.In “Interference cancellation for non-orthogonal mul-tiple access used in future wireless mobile networks” [2],X. Su et al. develop an analytical model on error effectsof practical successive interference cancelation schemesfor non-orthogonal multiple access. The authors furtherpropose an interference-predicted minimum meansquare error (IPMMSE) IC by modifying the MMSEweight factor using interference signals.In “Receiver-assisted cellular/Wi-Fi handover manage-ment for efficient multipath multimedia delivery in het-erogeneous wireless networks” [3], Cao et al. propose anew receiver-assisted stream control transmission proto-col (SCTP)-based cellular/Wi-Fi handover managementmechanism for multimedia delivery. The motivation isto (i) optimize SCTP handover management and achieveoverhead balancing between the sender and receiver; (ii)improve SCTP loss recovery ability and multimediatransmission performance.In “A localized fault detection algorithm for mobilitymanagement in the strongly t-diagnosable wireless adhoc network under the comparison model” [4], Kung etal. develop a localized algorithm for detecting faultynodes in strongly one-step t-diagnosable wireless ad hocnetworks (WANETs). They prove that the proposed al-gorithm only trigger linear time complexity, which isrelatively efficient comparing with some other previouslyproposed schemes in the literature. They also presentsome examples to clarify how to accomplish thecomparison-based fault detection process.3 Mobility security and privacy protectionAnother promising topic is mobility security and privacyprotection. EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking (2017) 2017:188 DOI 10.1186/s13638-017-0972-6open-source Asterisk private branch exchange software.The basic elements include Docker lightweightvirtualization, secure voice coding and real-time migra-tion technologies.In “An efficient privacy protection in mobility socialnetwork services with novel clustering-based anonymi-zation” [6], Chen et al. propose an approach for categor-ical data clustering using rough entropy method withDBSCAN algorithm to improve the performance of k-anonymization approach and enhance privacy protectionin a mobility social network service.The article by Gu-Hsin Lai entitled “Detection of worm-hole attacks on IPv6 mobility-based wireless sensor net-work” [7] proposes a RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol forLow-Power and Lossy Networks)-based wormhole detec-tion mechanism to investigate malicious wormhole nodesif unreasonable rank values are identified.The article by G. Kim et al. entitled “Secure user au-thentication based on the trusted platform for mobiledevices” [8] describes a TEE-based trusted mobile zone(TMZ) system that builds the trusted platform into mo-bile devices using virtualization technology. The authorsalso propose a secure certificate-based user authentica-tion framework using the TMZ system that can increasethe reliability of the authentication process performedfor multiple devices in mobile networks.In order to provide an efficient traceable access con-trol in a mobile cloud computing environment, Guan etal., in “An efficient traceable access control scheme withreliable key delegation in mobile cloud computing” [9],construct a traceable CP-ABE system with the accesstree and realize the key delegation at servers withoutloss of traceability and then propose a new type of re-encryption method, which is based on an intuitivemethod that supports any monotonic access tree.The article by Nkenyereye et al. entitled “A secure bill-ing protocol over attribute-based encryption in vehicularcloud computing” [10] presents an application model fora secure billing protocol over attribute-based encryptionin vehicular cloud computing (VCC). It also proposes asecure billing protocol over attribute-based encryptionin VCC based on the techniques of attribute-based en-cryption, secret sharing scheme, certificateless signaturescheme, and hash chain technique.In “MATF: a multi-attribute trust framework forMANETs” [11], Khan et al. propose a comprehensivemulti-attribute trust framework to minimize the boot-strapping time and deal with selective misbehavior. Theproposed trust model enhances the security of mobile adhoc networks by enabling a node to identify and removemalicious nodes from the routing paths by overhearingtransmission at multiple nodes. The proposed securityscheme not only provides a way to detect attacks andmalicious behavior accurately and in a timely way butalso reduces the number of false positives by using theconcept of multi-watchdogs.In “Anonymous authentication scheme based onidentity-based proxy group signature for wireless meshnetwork” [12], Gao et al. propose a proxy-based authen-tication scheme, which combines proxy group signatureand identity-based group signature, based on a desig-nated hierarchical proxy architecture, in order to guar-antee an efficient anonymous authentication for wirelessmesh networks.4 Mobility prediction and energy efficient mobilityMobility prediction with big data processing, as well asenergy efficient mobility in wireless access networks, hasbecome a key issue in the design of future wireless mobilesystems. The article by Sánchez et al. entitled “Predictivealgorithms for mobility and device lifecycle managementin Cyber-Physical Systems” [13] presents an advance pre-dictive solution for managing the mobility and device life-cycle. The solution can meet all the requirements ofcyber-physical systems (CPS). The proposed solution isbased on an infinite loop, which calculates, in each iter-ation, a sequence of future system states using a CPSsimulator and interpolation algorithms.Yang et al., in “Mobility management through accessnetwork discovery and selection function for load balan-cing and power saving in software-defined networkingenvironment” [14], propose an optimal access networkdiscovery and selection function (ANDSF) algorithm forthe software-defined networking (SDN) environment.Unlike the traditional ANDSF solution, the proposed al-gorithm can appropriately assign network resources touser equipment and reduce the power consumption ofWi-Fi access points.5 Performance analysis of intelligent mobilityprotocols and architecturesPerformance analysis of intelligent mobility protocolsand architectures is also an important issue in futurewireless mobile networks. In “Secure dissemination ofsoftware updates for intelligent mobility in future wire-less networks” [15], Lee and Kwon propose a lightweightmethod to check the integrity of control flow semanticsfor the Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile environments.The proposed method transforms the binary code of pro-gram text into a verifiable form with semantic markers.Thus, it can prove the developers’ intention is unchangedin software update with respect to control flows.In “Intelligent popularity-aware content caching and re-trieving in highway vehicular networks” [16], Quan et al.propose a novel popularity-aware content caching and re-trieving strategy in VANETs named P-CCR, which innova-tively considers the information-centric networking (ICN)perspective into vehicles’ mobility and vehicular wirelessYou et al. EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking  (2017) 2017:188 Page 2 of 4communication in highway scenarios. The performanceanalysis shows that the proposed P-CCR solution signi-ficantly reduces delay and the number of interest packets,which can reduce network loads and avoid wastingresources.In “Survivable strategy set design for malicious attackpropagation in NEMO scenario” [17], Yao et al. proposetwo novel survivability strategies to handle malicious at-tack propagation in network mobility (NEMO) scenar-ios. The authors use some of the active users toillustrate the NEMO survivability performance based oncontinuous-time Markov chain and find the relationshipbetween survivability performance and survivable strat-egy when faced with malicious attacks in a NEMO sce-nario. The performance analysis results show that itwould be helpful for us to choose the right survivablestrategy at the right time.In “Structural analysis of packing schemes for extract-ing hidden codes in mobile malware” [18], J. Lim and J.Yi analyze the fundamentals behind the main code-hiding schemes used by mobile malware and, throughempirical tests, they present methods for extracting theoriginal code hidden in the malware through reverse en-gineering analysis. The authors also analyze in detail themethod of extracting the actual code responsible for ma-licious behavior from the packed android applicationpackage (APK) files.6 Other issuesThere are three articles that deal with other issues relatedto future wireless and mobile networking technologies.The article by Andrysiak et al. entitled “Network anomalydetection for railway critical infrastructure based on auto-regressive fractional integrated moving average” [19] pro-poses a novel two-stage network traffic anomaly detectionmethod for the railway transportation critical infrastruc-ture monitored using wireless sensor networks.In “Efficient resource allocation for passive opticalfronthaul-based coordinated multipoint transmission”[20], Wang et al. explore both the integer non-linearprogramming optimization model and the adaptive gen-etic algorithm to release the capacity pressure of thefronthaul transport network when coordinated multi-point (CoMP) is introduced. The authors also considerthe resource allocation problem of the passive opticalfronthaul network. Their solution tries to reduce thedownlink bandwidth and improve the optical resourceallocation efficiency of the optical fronthaul with min-imal impact on the fronthaul topology.In “Mobility support in Named Data Networking: asurvey” [21], Feng et al. provide a survey on the mobilitysupport in named data networking (NDN). First, theypresent the problem statement for both mobile pro-ducers and consumers in NDN, and then, they classifyand illustrate mechanisms of existing schemes based ontheir characteristics.
