Dr. Davenport also delivered the Twentieth Annual Edward F. Prichard Lecture. Born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, Guy Davenport did his undergraduate work at Duke University. Awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, he went to Merton College, Oxford, where he wrote on James Joyce's Ulysses. Afterwards, he completed a doctorate at Harvard University with a dissertation on the Cantos of Ezra Pound. He joined the University of Kentucky faculty in 1963. That same year saw publication of a book about Harvard natural philosopher Louis Aggasiz, followed by several volumes of poetry, translations from classical Greek, and critical essays on the chief modernist poets. In 1974, Scribners published his first collection of short sotries, entitled Tatli11'! A second collection of short stories, Davinci's Bicycle, appeared in 1979. Eclogues was produced in 1981 as well as a colleciton of 40 essays, Geography of the Imagination. Other publications include Thasos and Ohio, a volume of poems, in 1986; The Jules Verne Steam Balloon, a short story collection in 1987; A Table of Green Fields (1993); and The Cardiff Team (1996). A selection of Guy Davenport's paintings and drawings, A Balance of Quinces, appeared in 1996. His most recent work includes a 1997 collection of essays on literature and art, The Hunter Gracchus, and in 1998, a study of the representation of physical objects in literature and still-life paintgs entitled Objects on a Table. Guy Davenport is the receipient of numerous awards in the field of literature. These include the 0. Henry Award for short stories; tl1e 1981 Morton Douwen Zabel Award for fiction, presented by the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters; awards for translations from PEN and the Academy of American Poets; and the Leviton-Blumenthal Prize for poetry. In 1990 a coveted McArthur Fellowship allowed him to retire as a College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor after a 27-year academic career at the Univer-sity of Kentucky. 131 Library Associates 2002 On March 4, Dr. Nancy C. Martin was named the recipient of the 2002 University of Kentucky Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Excellence. A Harvard Ph.D, Dr. Martin is currently Vice-President of Research Administration at the University of Louisville. She combines molecular, genetic, biochemical, and cellular methods to study the interactions between cellular nuclei and mitochondria. Dr. Martin has made key discoveries in her field, enhancing the understanding of molecular genetics, and contributing to the genetic revolution in medicine. Dr. Martin has contributed to more than sixty refereed publications, and lectured at more than 100 conferences and scientific meetings. Since 1985 she has served as a member of several National Institute of Health study sections, and regularly serves as a reviewer for proposals to the National Science Foundation. In addition to numerous grants and honors, Dr. Martin was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Umea, Sweden in 1994. 2003 The 2003 Medallion for Intellectual Acheivement was awarded to Jean Ritchie, an Appalachian folk musician originally from Viper, Kentucky. Born and raised in Viper, Mrs. Ritchie recorded more than 30 albums of folk music in her career. In 1947, she moved to New York City and had a profound impact on the New York folk scene. Today, she is credited with almost single-handedly reviving interest in the mountain dulcimer and is an internationally known folk singer. She published several books about her family and her music, including the award-winning Celebration of Life. KET honored her with a special about her life and music, Mountain Born: The Jean Ritchie Story. Ms. Ritchie led 180,000 people in singing "Amazing Grace" for Pope John Paul II, has toured abroad, and performed extensively for television. She also served as artist-in-residence and guest professor at various colleges. The Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center The Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center was dedicated in February 2001. A generous and long-time patron of the arts in Central Kentucky, and a long-time friend of the UK Libraries, Mrs. Little's gift enabled the renovation of the 1974 annex to the former main library building -- The Margaret I. King Library -- for an innovative re-use. As a result, a 40,000 square foot facility now houses the combined collections and services of the Edward Warder Rannells Art Library, the Adelle G. Dailey Music Library, and the theatre collection. The Little Library offers a state-of-the-art listening and viewing center, over 80 public ethemet ports, group study rooms, and a 47-seat performance gallery. Special collections include the John Jacob Niles Center for American Music, the Wilcox Collection of early American hymnals and tune books, the Faber Collection of vintage country music, and a collection of over 500 slides of the paintings of Kentucky artist Harland Hubbard.
