Goldsmit and Barzilai (4) reported thata thousand times greater amount ofbluetonguevirus was needed when the yolk sac inoculationmethod was used than when the intravenousmethod was employed. The same workers (5)later reported that bluetongue virus could beisolated from sheep blood with a saving of 6weeks when the intravenous technique wasused. Later, intravascular inoculation of em-bryonated chicken eggs was found to be equiva-lent to sheep inoculation for isolation of blue-tongue virus from sheep blood (3).Traditional methods of intravascular inoc-ulation of chicken embryos have been laboriousand usually result in high embryonic mortalityfrom vascular trauma (2). Improved methodsrequire elaborate and costly instrumentation(2, 6) or two operators (2). The syringe-stabi-lizer unit described herein can be easily assem-bled from items readily available to all labora-tories at minimal cost. An operator workingalone using this unit can efficiently inoculateembryonated eggs with minimal vasculartrauma.Fabrication procedure. The syringe-stabi-lizer was assembled by mounting a 50-ml glasssyringe in an inverted position on a ring standat a 300 angle using two three-prong gripclamps (Fig. 1).
