DIRECTOR'S NOTE While doing research on this play, I wa struck by an observation made by Gillian Gill in her book Agatha Christie: The Woman and Her Mysteries. Gill argues that Agatha Christie's novels are "modern fairy stories for grown-up children." In the world we live in now, with regular acts of random violence, such as drive-by shootings, Christie's works have a poignant appeal because the source of evil is always discovered, the wicked are always brought to justice and life is always affirmed its order, dignity and importance. Steven Knight in Form and Ideology in Crime Fiction calls the structure of her novels "game-like": "force[ u 1 enough lo dilute the real strength of the threats that are played with." These aspects of her novels make them not only enjoyable, but a form of precarious wish-fulfillment on a deeper level. And if that were not enough, her characters are very compelling - ordinary people who are confronted with moral decisions. In this play, each of these victims was once a murderer and now is a pawn in a deadly game. Miss Marple always did say that a wealth of secrets are buried in the hearts and lives of ordinary people. In no other story is that more true than in Ten Little Indians, a favorite of Christie's, and one she herself adapted for the stage. PATRICK SCULLIN, KATE FILIATRAUT* WHO'S WHO IN THE CAST Chris Powers (Rogers) is currently on the four and one half year program pursuing a degre in Communications. This is his tenth show at John Carroll University. Acting to ushering, he has done it all. Upon graduation in December he will begin a career in the U.S. ARMY as a second Lieutenant at Fort Hood, Texas. Beth Beer (Mrs. Rogers) wants to point out that she is no relation to Fred and has never visited the neighborhood. She is an English major and has no idea what she plans to do with that, but at least she'll be able to speak the language fluently. John Cranley (Fred aracott) is a Freshman who will most likely major in Political Science. John's most worthwhile performance at St. Xavier, in Cincinnati, was Godspell. He is a happy and optimistic young man who likes to refer to his role in Ten Little Indians as a cameo appearance. Jennifer V. Wagner (Vera Claythorne) began acting on the John Carroll stage in the role of Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible. Since then she has appeared as the doctor in Baby, Jennie May Layman in The Diviners, and has worked with the crew for Camille. She hopes to someday have a career in the theatre. Andrew Zucca (Philip Lombard) made his JCU debut in The Crucible as John Proctor during his sophomore year. Since then he has appeared as ick Sakarian in Baby, and as Ferris Layman in The Diviners. Ethan Kucharski (Anthony Marston) is a Senior in a Junior's body at J(U with majors in Humanities and French, and a concentration in International Studies. Un-fortunately, his degrees will be of limited use because his professional modelling and acting pursuits will take him all over the world, which will allow him to hire others to think for him. His favorite lead appearance was in Hair, in Detroit. "Mom, Dad, thanks. Love ya." Neil Ryan (William Blore) is a Freshman atJCU, appearing on the Kulas stage for the first time. He is a Psychology and Communications double major. WHO'S WHO IN THE PRODUCTION STAFF Karen Gygli (Director) is an assistant professor of Communi-cations at JCU. She most recently directed the production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. atjCU. She has acted and directed at the Huron Playhouse, at Bowling Green State University and at Maryville College in Knoxville, Tennessee. James F. Beck (Scene Designer) is the faculty technical director at JCU. He also was the set designer for Holiday , The Nerd, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Diviners, The Crucible and Baby, the last two of which he also directed . Mark Kobak (Costume Designer) graduated from Baldwin-Wallace with a B.A. in theatre where he concentrated in set and costume design. Since then Mark has designed sets at Greater Miami Opera, Florida, and Clague Playhouse. He has also designed costumes for Misery Loves Company and B-W. Mark does wardrobe for Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Cleveland Opera, and Playhouse Square. In his spare time, Mark is a substitute for the Board of M ntal Retardation. Mark also wishes to thank friends of Bill W. for their support. Naima-Leone Hadden (Assistant Costume Designer) was a 1988 Baldwin-Wallace graduate where she was a costume shop foreman and a designer. She has since worked for Creal Lakes Theatre Festival, Playhouse Square, Cleveland Opera, and has designed for many community theaters. She is currently designing for Arts Educational Theatre Company . She wishes to thank her grandmother Ann for her wisdom and support. James E. Parker (Lighting Designer) has designed lighting for Camille and On Tidy Endings. He directed The Diviners last Spring. In addition, he has stage managed numerous shows at John Carroll. Jim hopes to try his hand at sel design in the near future. Laura Bell (Assistant Director) is going backstage for the s c-ond time. The first being as lighting opera tor in the block bust r hit On Tidy Endings , produced here at JCU another Detroiler 1 She was last seen on stage as Clelia in The Nerd. Laura is a junior from Berkley, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Lisa Chrysler (Stage Manager) is now working on her first show here at John Carroll. Although in high school she appeared in both Guys and Dolls and The Music Man , along wilh producing several other shows. Lisa is a junior from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, near Detroit. (Who says theatre is dead in Detroit?) Michael J. Quillin (General Mackenzie) is a Sophomore English major, who come out of St. Loui , and has a very nice family. Tricia Rae (Emily Brent) is a Senior at John Carroll majoring in French with a per onal concentration in Theatre. Previ-ously, she has assistant directed The Crucible, and Baby. She was last seen on stage as Linda Seaton in Holiday. She i happy to be back after her hiatus from the stage, and wishes to thank Jim and Karen for making a difference, and John for putting up with her. Joseph M. Guay (Lawrence Wargrave) is a Sophomore Communications major, who is an Agatha Christie fanatic. This is Joe's first on stage performance at JCU, although he was Assistant Stage Manager for Midswnmer Night's Drca111, and The Diviners, an experi nee he truly enjoyed. Dale Hall (Or. Armstrong) is a junior Mathematics major, and is appearing in his third John Carroll stag production. An aspiring actuary, he hails from the ghetto of S ville, Ohio. *ALPHA PSI OMEGA Alpha Psi Omega (A¥Q) is the national theatre honorary fraternity. Members of Alpha Psi Om ga are committed to the production of quality collegiate theatre throughout the United Sta tes of America. The Mu Theta cast of Alpha Psi Omega is chartered at John Carroll University, and its members serve the local communities in their production of theatre.
