Adaptieve moleculaire systemen waarin op spiropyran gebaseerde moleculaire schakelaars een cruciale rol spelen staan centraal in dit proefschrift. Zulke systemen kunnen reageren op prikkels (zoals licht, pH, elektriciteit, etc.) met een verandering in moleculaire, en daarbij materiële, eigenschappen zoals kleur, zuurgraad, of geleiding, onder andere. Hoewel spiropyrans en gerelateerde moleculen al 100 jaar lang bekend zijn, is het nog steeds een veelvoorkomend gebruiksmiddel in de moderne wetenschappelijke literatuur en, steeds meer, in commerciële toepassingen (bijv. kleurveranderende brilglazen). De grote uitdaging is het vertalen van de verandering in een enkel molecuul naar de macroscopische wereld zodat wij op onze schaal de verandering ook kunnen ervaren en benutten.In dit proefschrift wordt allereerst bewijs van principe geleverd door synthese en karakterisatie van modelstoffen die in staat zijn effectief polymeren te genereren, waarin het daaropvolgende schakelen tussen eigenschappen wordt hersteld. Vervolgens wordt deze kennis gebruikt om functionele polymeren te maken van spiropyran, waarbij tevens nieuwe functies werden blootgelegd. Een dezer functies is inherent aan de spiropyran en is schijnbaar over het hoofd gezien al deze tijd, en is daarom onderzocht in een apart hoofdstuk. Ten slotte wordt een nieuwe variatie van spiropyran onderzocht door de structuur van twee zulke moleculen te verenigen, wat tot nieuwe, en bovenal interessante, eigenschappen leidt.In zijn geheel draagt dit proefschrift bij aan het vooruitstreven van dit enerverend onderzoeksgebied van spiropyran moleculaire schakelaars, terwijl tegelijkertijd enkele belangwekkende fundamentele kwesties opgelost zijn aangaande de kleurveranderingen van spiropyrans. Maar natuurlijk zijn in dit proces ook weer vele nieuwe kwesties opgegraven.Smart molecular systems in which spiropyran based molecular switches play a key role are the central focus of this thesis. These systems respond to stimuli (e.g., light, pH, electricity, etc.) through a change in molecular, and thereby material, properties such as color, acidity, or conductivity, amongst others. Although spiropyrans and related compounds have been known for over a hundred years, they are still ever-present in the contemporary scientific literature and, increasingly, in commercial uses (for example the sunglasses that change color). The key challenge with such functional molecules is to translate the changes that occur in a single molecule to the macroscopic world so that we can experience the result and put it to use.In this thesis first the proof of principle was demonstrated by synthesizing and characterizing model compounds that are capable of generating polymers effectively, after which their switching between properties was restored. This knowledge is then applied to create functional polymers of spiropyran, through which new responses were uncovered. One of these happened to be inherent to the spiropyran molecule, being seemingly overlooked all this time, thus being fully explored in a separate chapter. Finally, a new variation is explored through fusing of two spiropyrans together, yielding new and, moreover, interesting new responses.As a whole, this thesis contributes to the advancement of the exciting field of spiropyran photochromes and at the same time we have answered key fundamental questions regarding the coloration of spiropyrans. Of course many more questions have been raised in the process
