Productiebedrijven worden dagelijks geconfronteerd met de uitdaging om te produceren tegen zo laag mogelijke kosten, terwijl ze te maken hebben met een onzekere vraag naar producten. Bedrijven hebben keuze uit twee hoofdmethoden om hiermee om te gaan: vooraf produceren en dan uit voorraad leveren of produceren op bestelling. Als een bedrijf beide methoden gebruikt binnen één productiesysteem spreken we van ‘hybride productie’. Omdat echter de manieren van plannen van voorraadproductie en productie op bestelling erg van elkaar verschillen, ligt het niet direct voor hand hoe de planning van een hybride productiesysteem georganiseerd moet worden. In dit proefschrift nemen we deze uitdaging onder de loep.Een belangrijke uitdaging bij productie op bestelling is het halen van strakke leveringsdeadlines. De prioriteit van een order hangt dus doorgaans af van de resterende tijd tot de deadline. Bij voorraadproductie bestaat de uitdaging uit het laag houden van de voorraadkosten en tegelijkertijd het behouden van voldoende voorraad om klanten direct te leveren. Op de productievloer hangt daarom de prioriteit van voorraadproducten doorgaans af van het voorraadniveau.In veel bestaande, populaire methoden om hybride productie te plannen wordt de planning van één van de ordertypen geïntegreerd in een methode die bedoeld is voor de ander. Hierbij wordt echter gemakkelijk voorbijgegaan aan interacties en invloeden van een hybride productiesysteem. In een aantal studies toont dit proefschrift hoe de planning van orderproductie en voorraadproductie kan worden geïntegreerd op een meer flexibele manier en dat dit significante kosten- en/of leveringsvoordelen op kan leveren.Production companies face the daily challenge of producing at minimal cost, while they have to fulfill uncertain demand. Companies can choose between two basic strategies to cope with this: produce in advance and deliver products off the shelf (make-to-stock), or produce after products have been ordered (make-to-order). Combining the two strategies in one facility is known as hybrid production. However, because the production planning and control for each of the strategies is very different, it is not at all obvious how it should be organized for the hybrid facility. This thesis deals with this challenge.For make-to-order, a main challenge of the planning is to realize tight delivery dates. Hence, an order's priority will generally depend on the time until its delivery date. For make-to-stock, the challenge is to keep inventories and accompanying costs low, while maintaining high service rates. The priority of an inventory replenishment order generally depends on the stock level.Intuitive and popular approaches for hybrid production integrate the planning and control of one order types into the other. However, in doing so, interactions and influences of the hybrid company state are easily overseen. In a number of studies, this thesis shows how the planning of make-to-order and make-to-stock can be integrated in a more flexible manner and that significant cost and/or delivery benefits can be achieved
