This paper presents the works of two choreographers in order to explore how their creative practices reflect a concern for meaning. In discussing Martha Graham and George Balanchine, I will describe various works in each choreographer\u27s repertory in order to illustrate that although each choreographer works in a different form, the creative impulse of each is the same.
Although I will be focusing on these two choreographers and their works, I will also consider the nature of choreography in so far as it represents a creative, interpretative impulse. In addition, considering the model of world construction proposed by Berger, I will reflect on the dancer and the viewer as participants in the meaning that emerges from dance
