October 2003, Vol. 93, No. 10  SAMJBRIEWEGuidelines for CPDaccreditation of the South AfricanSociety of Medical OncologyTo the Editor: There do not appear to be guidelines in use foraccreditation of continuing professional development (CPD)activities in South Africa, or indeed in many other parts of theworld.  The South African Society of Medical Oncology(SASMO) has adopted the guidelines below, based in part onthe guidelines of the Canadian Medical Association for theinteraction between industry and doctors.  Guidelines1. The primary purpose of CPD activities is to address theeducational needs of medical doctors and other health careproviders in order to improve and maintain the health care ofpatients.2. Activities that are primarily promotional in nature shouldbe identified as such and should not be considered as CPD.3. One or more medical organisers, who are independent andof academic standing, will be appointed.  They will beresponsible for ensuring the scientific validity, objectivity andcompleteness of CPD activities. 4. Lecturers should use generic names rather than tradenames in the course of CPD activities. If specific products arementioned, there should be a balanced presentation of theprevailing body of scientific information on the product and ofreasonable, alternative treatment options. If unapproved usesof a product or service are discussed, presenters must informthe audience of this fact. 5. Lecturers at CPD events must disclose to the participantsany financial affiliations with manufacturers of products orservice providers mentioned at the event, or withmanufacturers of competing products or providers ofcompeting services.6.  CPD publicity and written materials should acknowledgefinancial or other aid received. This material will not bepromotional in nature.7. It is preferable that promotional displays not be in thesame room as the educational activity.8.  Medical attendees should always maintain professionalautonomy, independence and commitment to the scientificmethod.9. Attendees may accept patient or professional teaching aidsappropriate to their area of practice provided these aids carryonly the logo of the donor company. 10.
