The Networker Publication of the Gay/Lesbian Community Network Vol II, No. 2 October, 1990 COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER YOU ARE Once again, its National Coming Out Day (the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights) -- time to push the boundaries of our respective closets just a little farther out. We'll be helped to understand this important day -- October 11 to be exact -- by Diane Elze, president of the Maine Lesbian Gay Political Alliance (MI.GPA), who will speak at 7:30 p.m. at the Damn Yankee on the second floor of the Memorial Union at the University of Maine (that's in Orono). The event is free -- and Diane is an incredibly powerful speaker. AIDS WALK ON OCTOBER 7 Bangor and Ellsworth each will be hosting locations for MAINE AIDS WALK '90, a pledge walk for AIDS service organizations. Registration is at 11:00 a.m. on October 7. Bangor walk begins at Cascade Park and Ellsworth walkers will meet at City Hall. Pledge sheets can be obtained by calling 990-3626 (Bangor) or 667-3506 (Ellsworth). Walkers are needed, as well as helpers along the route. Some time ago, we discussed the need for a logo, but it got put on the backburner probably through a lack of belief that any of us had the ability to "draw a straight line." (ed. note: who needs straight lines?) Anyway, for some time I have been thinking of the letters GLCN and shuffling them around in my mind, cursing their seemingly visual incompatibility. Eventually I came up with this idea for you all to think about. The G and Lare joined in a continuous line and neither is bigger, nor smaller than the other. Although, upon reflection, I suppose it depends on each individual's point of view. I hope this doesn't upset any of those among us who might have separatist leanings. I thought a great deal about this and came to the conclusion that if we cannot learn to understand and support each other, how can we expect, at the very least, tolerance and lack of prejudice from the world outside our family. The line continues through both Gay and Lesbian to make the encircling community which is larger than either of them. This, in turn, continues on to make the Network, crossing and connecting all of us. The design can be put inside a triangle or a circle when the occasion demands. Please let us know how you feel about this logo. Maybe someone can come up with some other ideas. Let us hear from you!!! A GAY TEENAGER NEEDS OTHER GAY YOUTH by Ryan I am writing on behalf of gay teenagers. I feel we need a group to support us and just to be around some other gay people our own ages. Gays of all ages know it can be hard being gay. Being gay in school is as hard as learning to walk or riding a bike! Some of you older gay/lesbian people should know what I am talking about. We want people to talk to, to get to know, and help us feel good about ourselves. All we want is to like ourselves and feel happy about ourselves.
