The Androscoggin River flows through New Hampshire and Maine. Historically, it has been one of the most heavily industrialized and polluted rivers in the US. Historical depictions of the river, especially as relate to the environment, have focused on traditional liberal economic, capitalist, narratives. Using a Marxist lens to examine this historical setting and the relationship between humanity and nature adds to what has been a one-sided story. The Marxist examination reveals that the river has been subject to domination, valuation, and separation at the hands of wealthy industrialists. In addition, the river\u27s role as a provider of labor for the mills and their owners means that Marxism is able to define and explain that relationship in a way which has not been done before
