After a careful analysis of greek and Islam societies we have appreciated many resemblances between their marriage systems. They formalize them by an oral contract between the future husband and the selected woman's father. Moreover the acts engýe and 'adq as the figures kýrios and walí are rather similar. Both kinds of marriage also require the dowry in order to take a wife, although in the Islam societies the husband is who gives it, but not the woman's father as in the Athens. However they differ in other respects that are not essential, but superficial.No debemos olvidar que la cuenca del Mediterráneo ha conocido desde tiempos remotos el florecimiento de varias culturas, de entre las que destacan la griega, predecesora de nuestra civilización occidental y la islámica que, aunque nacida allende sus orillas, se extiende pronto por toda su ribera sur, con lo que no vamos a renunciar a considerar este mar como la acogedora cuna de las dos civilizaciones. Teniendo esto in mente, nuestro trabajo pretende un mayor acercamiento de ambas mediante el estudio comparativo de un aspecto de importancia capital, la mujer en el sistema matrimonial, para, a través del mismo, intentar detectar el grado de similitud o divergencia que en ellas convergen.
