The Networker Publication of the Gay Lesbian Community Network March 1991 Come Out For UMO's Awareness Week Plans are being finalized for an exciting week of events at U Maine Orono. L~i.__cm__.s_;ls_~-'SY..a...},___g§._y __ Aw~§S ... J!~.~, April 8-12, will feature speakers, a film series, an information table, and a dance, among other activities. Although all of the details are not available at this time, we know that the keynote speaker (scheduled for Tuesday evening) will be Claudia Brenner of Washington DC's Anti-Violence Project. Films will include, "If She Grows Up Gay", "Comrades In Arms", "Tongues Untied", "Revenge of the Teenage Perverts", and "Silent Pioneers". Peaches Bass, Director 9f the Maine AIDS Alliance will be speaking on Gay/Lesbian health issues. Finally, a dance is planned for Saturday night at the Pavillion theater. John Ostuni will be the d.j., so count on a wonderful variety of music. (John was the d.j. at last summers Charlie Howard dance a nd the GLCN Valentine's Dance). A complete schedule of events for Lesbian Bisexual Gay Awareness Week will be included in April's "Networker". If you want more specifics before this time you can try calling the Office for Student Services in the Memorial Union 581-1~06. ********************************************************************** Local AIDS Organization Needs Our Help Eastern Maine AIDS Network (EMAN) and the Downeast AIDS Network (DEAN) are currently planning two fundraising events and a candlelight memorial service. The two group are asking for assistance from the gay and lesbian conmunities. On April 1~, . EMAN and DEAN will co-sponsor "CASINO NIGHT" at Bangor's gay bar, The Riverfront Lounge. Volunteers are needed to operate game tables at this event. Assistance is also needed to organize the third annual "Strike __ AIDS/SPare _.J.,ives" Bowl-A-Thon scheduled for Saturday April 27. The forth annual candlelight memorial will be coordinated with other AIDS organizations throughout the country and the world. Energy that we would give to these three events would be greatly apprec iated by EMAN and DEAN . If you'd like to get involved call 990-3626. This is the EMAN office. Often, we are unable to offer much ass1stance to the caner, but we'd ltke to do better. Several male transvestites have contacted us lately, hoping to mal<e contact with others. We've done the best we can to help them l tnk up, but tt occurs to us there may be more folks among us -- or at least others known to NETWORKER readers -- who would like to be In touch wtth each other. ME 04401. **Information** Some of you on the GLCN mailing list have expressed concern over receiving a flyer about the John McCutcko~concert from the Peace and Justice Center. We want to stress that we DO_)fQ._T share our mailing list with other organizations. Civil Rights Bill Work is currently going on towards the passage of a civil rights bill which would extend protection to gays, lesbians and other minorities in the state of Maine. Presently, information is being collected to document instances of and violence towards gay men and lesbians. This information will be used to demonstrate the need for the.legislation. If you have experienced homophobia in your workplace, or in other aspects of your life, providing this information could be helpful for the passage of this legislation. Your experience can be provided anonymously by calling 9~2 - 3901, or you can write the instance down and send to the GLCN P.O. Box and we will send it along. If you are interested in working towards the passage of this legislation call Robin G. at 866 - 7958. ., Le5bian Potluck Supper and Movie "Therese and Isabelle" Hey Girls! Are you looking for a way to meet new friends besides the bar? Join us Friday, March 22 at 6pm at the Peace and Justice Center in Bangor for delicious food, pleasant company and a fun dyke video that you probably haven't seen. About the flick ••. "Therese and Isabelle" is a full length black and white film made in. the sixties (maybe early seventies) set in France at an exclusive boarding school for girls (no sub-titles though. The girls speak English with French accents). The opening scene shows an adult Therese returning to the now deserted school to remember and apparently come to terms with her passionate love affair with her old boarding school chum, Isabelle. the movie consists mostly of flashbacks of the developing relationship between teenaged Therese and Isabelle (who both look about 35, Oh Well). Some scenes contain nudity and erotic language, but little actual sex. It was , I'am sure, very daring for its ti.me. It's not "Desert Hearts" but we promise, No fruits, no vegetables, and no chirping. Those of you who attended GLCN's last movie night will appreciate this! Besides, you've all seen "Desert Hearts"! For more info call 862-5907. A Response To Mr. Gorsline's Opinion Because of a lack of space, we had to shorten this · response to Robin Gorsline's letter pertaining to the Gulf War. "It is obvious that Mr. Gorsline doesn't understand the issues or reasons for involvement in the Persian Gulf War ... ... The reasons for Saddam's invasions are quite simple really. He wants to lead the Arab world ... through military force, or even economic blackmail through the use of oil as a weapon, against countries that would prevent him. The reasons for the invasions of Iran and Kuwait was to control the oil fields of those nations, to deny income and initiate economic collapse and dependence of those nations. This would give him great power over Western economies dependent on oil. Consider Saddam with nuclear weapons and control of the world ' s oil supply. He would have considerable power ... As for the man himself, he is ruthless. He assassinated his way to the top of Iraq ... He has used some of the most hideous weapons ever developed by man on his own people ... As for gay and lesbians in the armed forces. It has no basis for opposition to the war. It is an internal matter that this society ·must deal with. A social matter. As is Jesse Helms. The only way to defeat the homophobia of people like Jesse Helms is to prove that his fears and opinions are wrong and the only way to do that is by being the best citizens we can possibly be.
