The author describes an evolution of the virtualization of information infrastructure from simple collocation through IaaS, PaaS, to SaaS identified as a “cloud””. The term “cloud” involves also a method of distributed storage of data and neuron mechanisms for indexing and searching. A “library in the cloud”” can mean both moving all the library technical infrastructure to the Internet or intensive use of public internet services in library activities. Limits in adoption of “clouds” I Polish libraries has also been discussed.Artykuł opisuje ewolucję wirtualizacji infrastruktury informatycznej od prostej kolokacji poprzez IaaS, PaaS, aż po SaaS utożsamiany z „chmurą”. Termin „chmura” obejmuje także metodę rozproszonego przechowywania danych, jak też neuronowe mechanizmy indeksacji i wyszukiwania. „Biblioteka w chmurze” może oznaczać zarówno przeniesienie całej infrastruktury bibliotecznej do Internetu, jak i intensywne wykorzystanie ogólnodostępnych serwisów internetowych w działalności bibliotecznej. Na koniec wskazano na ograniczenia stosowania „chmur” w polskim bibliotekarstwie
