The aim of the article is to explain the importance of the characteristics of the user in relation to preservation and revitalization of traditional urban patterns. The new users of the traditional urban patterns are alienated to their new built environment from the socio-economic and socio-cultural point of view, and they have problems in perceiving the environmental codes. The consequence of this the historical, cultural and meaning properties of traditional urban patterns are changed quickly and the situation become more difficult to preserve and revitalize. Observation and inquiries show that the new users of the traditional urban patterns are of low-income group, not well educated, alienated to their built environment and to each other. Indicators developed by observation and inquiries for the Gaziantep case proofs that characteristics of the user of the traditional urban patterns are lower generally then the hypothetic concepts and standards. In this case, if the user characteristics are changed into the normal level (acceptable level by the standards) by an increase in environmental conditions, then, it may be possible to preserve and revitalize the traditional urban patterns. By means of, this article proposes an evaluation to the indicators of the user, and to their tendency which can be used as a guide line for the solution of the problem; and also, explains how to obtain and classify systematically the indicators of the user by means of observation and inquiries. Throughout the evaluation process, hypothetic concepts and standards are taken as a basic measure. Geleneksel şehirsel doku ve mekan kullanıcıları sosyo-ekonomik ve sosyo-kültürel özellikleri açısından bulundukları yapılanmış çevreye yabancı olup, aynı zamanda çevreyi algılamada problem yaşamaktadırlar. Bunun sonucu olarak, geleneksel şehirsel doku ve mekansal oluşumların tarihi, kültürel ve anlamsal özellikleri daha hızlı bir şekilde farklılaşmakta, korunmaları ve yaşatılmaları da güçleşmektedir. Makale, probleme çözüm olabilecek kuramsal yaklaşımlarda kullanılmak üzere, kullanıcı karakteristiklerinin gözlem ve anket soruşturmalarıyla sistematik bir şekilde ortaya çıkarılması ve genel eğilimleri açıklayan göstergelerin elde edilmesine yönelik bir değerlendirme sunmaktadır.
