Colonel Tilden1s son, Charles, died some eight or ten years ago, but his daughter Prances Tilden Osborne (Mrs. W. A. Osborne), lives at 197 Jason Street, Arlington, Massa­chusetts; and it is possible that she would have or could obtain for you the copy of General Robinson's letter to Colonel Tilden. Nora Fairbanks has been away from Bangor for a good many years, and I do not know her address. I tried to obtain it when I went home over the weekend, but Mrs. Hyland Fairbanks, widow of Captiin Fairbanks' son, was not at home -- in fact, nobody was at home. Upon investigation, we find that since you were born in Maine, we have indeed been remiss in not claiming you previously. The Maine Author Collection is an exhibit of about 1500 inscribedm presentation volumef, written by Maine persons. le also preserve all available information about and correspondence with our authors. You will readily understand, therefore, the importance of such a collection, and our regret at your omission in it. Our policy has been to accept gift copies of Maine authors' books for the collection, and to purchase copies of the non-fiction titles for general circulation. Inasmuch, however, as you have already been so kind as to present the library with a copy, we Would not of course request another gift. We therefore ask if you will not inscribe a copy of THE ROAD TO RICHMOND, and amm& it to us with an invoice, so that your work may be represented in the exhibit. In a second-hand book store in Oakland, California, I found one day the copy of the "History of the Fifth Regiment Maine Volunteers" which the author, the former chaplain of the regiment, had inscribed to the man in whose house he had written the book. It seemed to me that the Maine State Library would be the most comfortable place for this book to spend the rest of its useful life in. Yours very truly, Harold A.
