Abstract

Stamp issues by the Soviet Union in 1983, showing Anton Mengs on an undated self-portrait.Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) was born in Aussig, Bohemia, as the son of Ismael Mengs, a painter of miniatures, who had converted to Protestantism. Mengs received his training in Dresden and Rome, where he contributed to the decoration of the church San Giovanni, and created a number of portraits of Italian aristocrats. A European celebrity in his time, who was frequently compared to Tizian and Corregio, Mengs was appointed by King Charles III of Spain to become the court painter in 1762.
