KIDNAPPING AND DEATH OF RIGOBERTAS MOTHER = REMEMBERING HER MOTHER Por ¡by Rigoberta Menchú "El tiempo que estamos viviendo lo tenemos que vencer con la presencia de nuestros antepasados" M I madre decía que una evolución, un cambio, sin la participación de las mujeres no sería un cambio y no sería victoria. Ella estaba clara como si fuera una mujer de tantas teorías y con tanta práctica. Mi mamá casi no habló el caste-llano, pero hablaba dos lenguas, el quiché y un poco el keckchi. Mi mamá utilizaba todo ese valor y ese conocimiento que tenía y se fue a organizar. Ay, pero me dolía mucho cuando oía decir que mi madre andaba por todas partes. Así mi mamá empezó a recorrer muchos departamentos, organi-zando. Y, precisamente, iba directo a las mujeres y decía que una mujer cuando ve que su hijo es torturado, su hijo es quemado, no es capaz de perdonar a nadie y no es capaz de quitarse ese odio, ese rencor; yo no soy capaz de perdonar a mis enemigos. Llevaba un gran mensaje y tuvo mucho pegue en muchos lugares. Mi mamá fue respetada por mucha gente. Incluso llegó hasta los pobladores. No había necesidad de reuniones para llegar a hablar con mi mamá, sino que llegaba a las casas, platicaba y trabajaba torteando y dando su experiencia. Era así su trabajo. Contaba su experiencia y ayudaba a la gente en el trabajo. Recuerdo, cuando desapareció mi hermanito, todos los de la comunidad se unieron. Mi madre fue a reclamar a la policía, al ejército y no le dieron ninguna respuesta. Entonces, todos, todos fueron. Por primera vez la comunidad actuaba junta: la mayor parte eran mujeres. Sabíamos que si bajaban los hombres, eran secuestrados y torturados. Entonces mi madre decía que era preferible hacer una manifestación de mujeres y niños, a ver si eran tan descarados los del ejército; si eran tan cobardes, de masacrar a las mujeres y a los niños. Pero también son capaces. Ellas vinieron con toda la claridad de que iba a haber una masacre en el pueblo. Llegaron al pueblo, tomaron la municipalidad del pueblo y allí apresaron al alcalde. Era la primera vez que las mujeres actuaban así. Venían con sus hijos para protestar contra las autoridades por el secuestro y enseñarles el repudio. Días después fue cuando se tomó el Congreso de la República. Allí iban mi mamá, mi papá, los campesinos. Era el Día Nacional de Guatemala. Todos los diputados estaban reunidos. Y con la ayuda de los sindicatos de Guatemala, con la ayuda del CUC (Comité de Unidad Campesina) se unieron otros Indígenas del Quiché a los de Uspatán en la marcha que tomó el Congreso. Los diputados ya no pudieron sacarnos. "We must prevail over the times we are living with the help of our ancestors" M y mother's words told them that any evolution, any change, in which women had not participated, would not be a change, and that there would be no victory. She was as clear about this as if she were a woman with all sorts of theories and a lot of practice. My mother spoke almost no Spanish, but she spoke two languages - Quiché, and a bit of Keckchi. She took all that courage and all that knowledge she had, and went to organize her people. But it was, oh, so painful for me, when I'd hear that my mother was travelling all over the place. My mother travelled through many provinces organizing. She actually went to the women and said that when a woman sees her son tortured and burned to death, she is incapable of forgiving anyone or ridding herself of that hatred, that bitterness. "I can't forgive my enemies," she said. She took this important message and was very influential in many places. Many people respected her. She even went into the shanty towns round the cities. You didn't have to go to a meeting to talk to my mother because she'd go to the houses and recount her experiences while they all made tortillas. That was how she worked. She talked about her experiences while she helped them with their work. I remember when my little brother disappeared, our whole community united and joined together in protest, after my mother had gone to enquire after him at the police and the army and had received no reply. So, they all went, all of them. The community acted together for the first time; the majority of them were women. We knew that if the men went they'd be kidnapped and tortured. So my mother said it would be better to hold a demonstration of women and children to see if the enemies, the army, were so shameless, so cowardly, that they would massacre women and children. We knew that they were capable of it. That is, we all came knowing full well that there could be a massacre in the town. They reached the town, occupied the administrative offices, and took the mayor prisoner. It was the first time women had acted this way. They came with their children to protest to the authorities against the kidnapping, and demonstrate their revulsion. Some days later they occupied the Guatemalan Congress. My mother was there, and my father, and the peasants. It was on the Guatemalan National Day. All the deputies were there. Indians from all over El Quiché joined those from Uspatán in the march and, with the help of the 30 Teníamos la ayuda de los estudiantes también. Cuando entraron al Congreso, inmediatamente los soldados levantaron las armas. Y el que iba encabezando la manifestación era uno de mis hermanos y cuando empieza a hablar, levantan el fusil y le apuntan. Entonces viene mi hermanita con su flor blanca. Y eso significa mucho para nosotros. Sólo cortamos una flor cuando hay una gran necesidad o cuando hay algo importante. Entonces, todos los manifestantes levantan los mismos manojos de flores, significando que pedían el respeto hacia la vida. Mi hermanita pasó delante del fusil y se puso enfrente con su flor, entonces ya no se atrevieron a ametrallar a mi hermano. Ocupamos el Congreso para reclamar a mi hermano que fue secuestrado, a los cientos de catequistas que fueron secuestrados en diferentes aldeas del pueblo y reclamar también que saliera el ejército de las comunidades. Que el ejército no nos siga masacrando y violando a las mujeres. Nos dijeron que el Congreso no era la casa de los Indios y que los Indios no tenían derecho de entrar. Que era una casa respetable, porque era la casa de las personalidades del Gobierno. Pero los campesinos dijeron, aquí estamos y aquí nos matan... O sea, se fueron a exponer su vida. Si allí había una masacre, ellos sabían que esa masacre no iba a ser de balde. Inmediatamente la respuesta fue la quema de mi hermano. Masacraron a otras aldeas, como siempre. Ya después de eso nos seguimos organizando constantemente, por una causa justa y una motivación. Entonces fue secuestrada mi madre y quiero anticipar que todos los pasos de las violaciones y las torturas que le dieron a mi madre los tengo en mis manos. No quisiera aclarar muchas cosas porque implica la vida de compañeros que aún trabajan muy bien en su trabajo. La bajaron al campamento que se llamaba Chajup donde también fue torturado mi hermanito. Al llegar al campamento fue violada por los altos jefes militares que mandaban la tropa. Mi madre estuvo en grandes torturas. Le pusieron un uniforme militar y después le decían, si eres un guerrillero, por qué no nos combates aquí. Pedían a mi madre decir dónde estábamos nosotros. Y si daba una declaración, la dejaban libre. Pero mi madre sabía muy bien que lo hacían para torturar a sus demás hijos y que no la dejarían libre. Ella hacía como si no sabía nada. Ella defendió hasta lo último a cada uno de sus hijos. Y, al tercer día que estaba en torturas le habían cortado las orejas. (cont. pág. 46) unions and of the CUC, took over the Congress building. When the deputies realized what had happened, it was too late to get us out. We were helped by the unions, other peasants and students as well. When they first entered the Congress, the soldiers immediately raised their rifles. The person at the head of the demonstration was one of my brothers. When my eldest brother began to speak, they raised their rifles and took aim. Then my little sister came with a white flower. This is very meaningful for us. We only cut flowers when we really need to or when it's for something important. Well, all the people on the demon-stration held bunches of flowers to mean that they appealed for respect for human life and also for a solution to their plight. My little sister put herself in front of the rifle with her flower, and they didn't dare shoot my brother. We occupied the Congress to plead for my little brother who'd been kidnapped, and for the hundreds of catechists who'd been taken away from different villages. We also demanded withdrawal of the army from our communities and that they cease massacring us and raping our women. What they told us was that Congress wasn't a building for Indians, and that Indians had no right to enter Congress. It was a respectable building because it was for members of the government. But the peasants said, we're here and it's here you can kill us... That is, they'd gone ready to die, knowing that if there was a massacre, it would not be in vain. Immediately the reply was to bum my brother. They went on massacring more villages, like before. After that, we went on organiz-ing continually because ours was a just cause and we were motivated by something real. My mother was kidnapped. And I want to say in advance that I have in my hands every detail of every step of the rape and torture suffered by my mother. I don't want to reveal too many things because it will implicate some compañeros who are still doing their work very well. They took her down to the camp - a camp called Chajup where my little brother was tortured as well. There she was raped by the officers commanding the troops. After that she was subjected to terrible tortures. They put a uniform on her and then they said: "If you're a guerilla why don't you fight us here." They asked her where we were, and said that if she made a confession, they'd let her go. But my mother knew very well that they did that so they could torture her other children and would never let her go. She pretended she knew nothing. She defended every one of us until the end. On the third day of her torture they cut off her ears. They didn't give her any food for many days. From the pain, from the torture all over her body, disfigured and starving, my mother began to lose consciousness and was in her death throws. Then the officer in charge sent for the medical team they have in the army and they gave her injections and enough serum to revive her. Mi madre, de los dolores, con las torturas que tenía en su cuerpo, toda desfigur-ada, sin comer, empezó aperder el conocimiento, empezó a estar en agonía. Después el oficial mandó a traer la tropa médica y le metieron inyecciones, y bastante suero para que mi madre reviviera. Le daban comida. Después de eso la empezaron a violar nuevamente. Mi madre fue desfigurada por los militares. Aguantó mucho, no se moría. Mi esperanza era que mi madre muriera junto con toda la naturaleza que ella tanto adoraba. La llevaron debajo de un árbol y la dejaron allí viva, casi en agonía. La dejaron allí más de cuatro o cinco días en agonía, donde tenía que soportar el sol, tenía que soportar la lluvia y la noche. Cuando se murió mi madre, los militares todavía se pararon encima de ella, se orinaron en la boca de mi madre cuando ya estaba muerta. Después dejaron allí tropa permanente para cuidar su cadáver y para que nadie recogiera parte del cuerpo, ni siquiera sus restos. Allí estaban los soldados cerca del cadáver y sentían el olor cuando mi madre empezó a tener bastante olor. Estaban allí cerca, comían cerca de mi madre-y, con el perdón de los animales, yo creo que ni los animales actúan así como actúan esos salvajes del ejército. Después mi madre fue comida por animales, por perros, por zopilotes que abundaban mucho en esa región, y otros animales, durante cuatro meses. Hasta que vieron que no había ninguna parte de los restos de mi madre, ni sus huesos, abandonaron el lugar. Claro, para nosotros, cuando supimos que mi madre estaba en plena agonía, era muy doloroso, pero después, cuando ya estaba muerta, no estábamos contentos, sin embargo, estába-mos satisfechos porque sabíamos que mi madre ya no tenía que sufrir más, porque ya pasó por todas las penas y era lo único que nos quedaba, desear que la mataran rápidamente, que ya no estuviera viva. ^ Versión editada de un capítulo del libro Me Llamo Rigoberta Menchú y Así me Creció la Conciencia, México, siglo veintiuno editores, 1985. Rigoberta Menchú nació en Chimel, departamento de El Quiché, Guatemala, el 9 de enero de 1959. En 1981 tuvo que abandonar Guatemala debido a su activa participación en el movimiento Indígena y Popular de su país. En agosto de 1982 participó en la primera reunión del Grupo de Trabajo Sobre los Pueblos Indígenas de ¡as Naciones Unidas, siendo la primera mujer indígena guatemalteca que llega a dicha organización. Ha recibido numerosos premios en reconocimiento a su labor, entre ellos el premio UNESCO "Educación para la Paz", París, 1990, y ha sido nominada para el Premio Nobel de la Paz 1992. Su padre, Vicente Menchú, murió quemado junto a otras treinta y ocho personas en la Embajada de España én Ciudad de Guatemala, en 1980, donde el grupo se había refugiado después de una manifestación. Su hermano Víctorfue fusilado públicamente y varios de sus otros hermanos también han sido asesinados por fuerzas militares del gobierno. (cont.from pg. 31) They gave her food. Then they started raping her again. She was disfigured by those same officers. She endured a great deal, but she didn't die. It was my hope that my mother would die surrounded by the nature she so loved. They put her under a tree and left her there, alive butdying.They left her there dying for four or five days, enduring the sun, the rain and the night. Rigoberta Menchú When my mother died, the soldiers stood over her and urinated in her mouth; even after she was dead! Then they left a permanent sentry there to guard her body so that no one could take it away, not even what was left of it. The soldiers were there right by her body, and they could smell my mother when she started to smell very strongly. They were there right by her; they ate near her, and, if the animals will excuse me, I believe not even animals act like that, like those savages in the army. After that, my mother was eaten by animals; by dogs, by the zopilotes there are round there, and the other animals helped too. They stayed for four months, until they saw that not a bit of my mother was left, not even her bones and then they went away. Of course, it was dreadful for us when we knew my mother was dying in agony. But, afterwards, when she was dead... naturally we weren't pleased because no human being is happy about that... but all the same we were relieved to know my mother wasn't suffering any longer. She'd gone through so much torment that the one thing we wanted most was for them to kill her quickly, that she should live no longer. ^ Edited version of the chapter from the book I, Rigoberta Menchú, An Indian Woman In Guatemala. In 1981 she had to leave Guatemala because she was active in the Indigenous and Popular Movement in her country. In August 1982, she attended the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous People, and was the first Guatemalan Indian woman to get to that organization. She has received many prizes in recognition of her work, including the UNESCO "Education for Peace" prize in Paris in 1990 and has been nominatedfor the Nobel Peace Prize for 1992. In 1990 her father, Vicente Menchú, was burned alive along with thirty-eight other people in the Spanish Embassy in Guatemala City, where they had taken refuge after a demonstra-tion. Her brother Victor was publicly executed byfiring squad and several of her other brothers were assassinated by the armed forces of the government. 46
