When an adversarial criminal justice system is considered, its use is immediately associated with phenomena such as publicity, orality, contradiction, concentration, immediacy and swiftness of evidence which is made effective in such a preponderant manner in a trial before an impartial judge.In order to guarantee the impartiality, judges are subjected to jurisdictional, disciplinary and social controls thereby enabling the isolation of the process motu proprio througt the manifestation of impairment or at the request of the parties and thereby enabling a judge to be disqualifiedThe present article comments on the causes of impediment and recusal according to the principalism of the Colombian accusatorial penal system, such as its processes and effectiveness to ensure the impartiality of judges in criminal trial.Cuando se piensa en un sistema penal acusatorio, inmediatamente se asocia su funcionamiento a las características de publicidad, oralidad, contradicción, concentración, inmediación probatoria y celeridad, lo cual se efectiviza de manera preponderante en el juicio oral, ante un Juez imparcial.Para garantizar la imparcialidad del Juez, se somete a este último a un control jurisdiccional, disciplinario e incluso social, habilitando su aislamiento del proceso motu proprio a través de la manifestación de impedimento o por solicitud de las partes, recusándolo para este efecto.En el presente artículo se exponen algunos comentarios sobre las causales de impedimento y recusación, acorde con la principialística del sistema penal acusatorio colombiano, así como su trámite y efectividad para lograr concretizar la imparcialidad del Juez penal
