De kennis over wat er werkt voor kinderen en jongeren die problemen hebben die zich uiten in gedrag als veel ruzie maken, tegendraads zijn, vechten, heeft de laatste jaren een ware vlucht genomen. Interventies waarvan de effectiviteit is aangetoond worden gezien als de voertuigen waarmee deze kennis over ´wat werkt´ kan worden toegepast in de praktijk. De uitkomsten voor kinderen, jongeren en hun families zijn echter niet in dezelfde mate verbeterd als de toename aan kennis. Dit verschil in de kennis over wat er werkt en de toepassing en het gebruik van deze kennis in de praktijk, heet ook wel de implementatiekloof. In dit proefschrift wordt ingegaan op een aantal vragen omtrent de implementatiekloof, de focus ligt hierbij op de juiste toepassing van de interventie door de professional (de zogeheten ‘behandelintegriteit’).  De resultaten van het onderzoek in dit proefschrift laten zien dat 1) ondanks dat het meten van behandelintegriteit belangrijk is, deze meting vaak ontbreekt of niet onder de juiste omstandigheden is uitgevoerd in studies, 2) toepassing van interventies met een hoge mate van behandelintegriteit een daadwerkelijke verbetering oplevert voor de uitkomsten van cliënten, en 3) gerichte en continue ondersteuning van professionals noodzakelijk is om hen in staat te stellen de interventie uit te voeren zoals bedoeld. In die ondersteuning is feedback op behandelintegriteit essentieel. Het organiseren van ondersteuning rond veel voorkomende, werkzame factoren in interventies kan een eerste stap zijn om ondersteuning voor professionals die meerdere interventies bieden, te integreren en uitvoerbaar te maken.Evidence concerning psychosocial interventions for children and young people with externalizing behavior problems has amassed at an impressive pace in recent years. Interventions that have been proven effective are now considered vehicles through which the knowledge of “what works” can be applied in practice. Outcomes for children, young people, and their families, however, have not improved in line with these advances in knowledge. This difference between the knowledge of “what works” and the application of this knowledge in real-life practice has become known as the “implementation gap”. This dissertation explores questions considering the implementation gap, with a focus on whether professionals are delivering the interventions as intended (treatment integrity). The results of the research underlying this dissertation show that 1) although measuring treatment integrity is important, it is often missing or not examined under adequate circumstances in studies, 2) applying interventions with a high level of treatment integrity makes a real difference to the end-users of the services and 3) targeted and continued support to professionals with a focus on providing feedback on levels of treatment integrity is necessary to enable them to deliver interventions as intended. Organizing support around common factors of interventions can be a first step in integrating and providing feasible support for professionals that provide more than one intervention
