The situation ten years ons we prepare to mark our journal’s 10thanniversary, we would like to retraceour steps along the journey so far anddescribe the current situation for our rea-ders’ knowledge.The Journal’s beginnings and its raison d’êtreThe journal Revista de Osteoporosis y MetabolismoMineral (ROMM) is the scientific publication ofthe Spanish Society of Bone Research and MineralMetabolism (SEIOMM, from its original Spanishtitle). Its creation was agreed on during the XIIISEIOMM Congress held in Oviedo in 2008. Untilthen, the Society journal was the Spanish Journalof Bone Metabolic Diseases, which had beenfounded in 1993 by Dr. Aurelio Rapado Errazti andpresented at the SEIOMM Congress held inCórdoba, Spain. Known as REEMO, this belongedto the Elsevier publishing company, then Doyma,directed by Dr. Rapado. This journal had an une-ven output during its existence. Its best stage waswhen Dr. Rapado did his utmost to ensure thateach issue’s content was mostly original material.In its last years, after the sad disappearance of Dr.Rapado, the REEMO decreased both in the num-ber of pages and in the interest that it engenderedfrom the scientific point of view. In 2008, the con-ditions imposed unilaterally by Doyma-Elsevier onSEIOMM to continue with its cooperation weredeemed unacceptable by SEIOMM. In the GeneralMeeting at Oviedo, it was agreed to terminate thecurrent contract with this publisher and create anew publication, owned by the SEIOMM, which isthe ROMM.The first point of debate raised at that gatheringwas whether or not the SEIOMM needed to havea scientific journal. The Assembly agreed, by aconsiderable majority, to create the currentJournal, financed by SEIOMM.From its inception, ROMM’s editorial board esta-blished the need to publish a journal with qualityarticles, editorials and relevant reviews. To thisend, standards uniformly accepted by the mostprestigious journals, such as those developed inUniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submittedto Biomedical Journals1 or the ethical principleson publications: Committee on Publication Ethics(COPE)2, were accepted from the beginning,including anonymous peer review of the manus-cripts submitted, requesting the cooperation ofresearchers and authors of recognized prestige inthe field of bone mineral metabolism. TheSEIOMM board of directors at that time, of whichwe were part director and editor, in its policy ofsupport for the Journal, considered it necessary toestablish a strategy for claiming original articlesthrough the research works awarded by theSEIOMM and FEIOMM. This strategy has beenmaintained by subsequent boards of directors.The road to wide dissemination. The majordatabases and repositoriesOur first objective was to achieve maximum diffu-sion and visibility for the Journal. To this end, wehave requested its inclusion in all existing databa-ses and repositories. One fact that has facilitatedthis work has been the completely free nature ofthe Journal, both to published articles (no amountis charged to authors, whether or not members ofthe SEIOMM) and to be able to access themthrough its website3 in full text and in both langua-ges, Spanish and English, with no embargoperiod.In some databases, the lesser ones, our Journal’sinclusion was simple, requiring only a requestform. In others, an assessment was compulsory bytheir respective expert committees, a process thatsometimes took months, with often varied requi-e-mail: manuel.sosa@ulpgc.esADOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S1889-836X2018000100001rements. The truth is that, once the process startedand after the inclusion of the ROMM in the first 5databases, each new acceptance not only increa-sed the number, but acted as a facilitating factor inthe following database.The inclusion in the SciELO database and reposi-tory marked the turning point in the publication ofthe Journal. For this, we had to request it twice,needing to adapt some characteristics and require-ments in order to achieve uniformity. The SciELOplatform is clearly involved in the DOAJ (DigitalOpen Access Journals)4 movement and as a resultof this collaboration we have been included in itsdatabase, as well as being able to obtain theDigital Object Identifier (DOI) of the articles ofour Journal, having jointly signed a collaborationdocument, published in this same issue, theDeclaration of Sant Joan d'Alacant5.Currently, the ROMM is included in 26 databasesand repositories and we have requested inclusionin at least 2 more. Among them, several veryimportant, such as SciELO, Scopus, Web ofScience, DOAJ, ERIHPLUS and Google Scholar.The inclusion in Scopus will make it possible toattain an impact factor for the first time, althoughit will be facilitated by Elsevier in the form of CiteScore and Scimago Journal Rank (Figure 1).Having a presence in virtually all databases, withthe exception of Medline, we have some objectiveand external data that inform our publication’squality. Thus, in 2015, the "H index" (system pro-posed by Jorge Hirsch, of the University ofCalifornia, to measure researchers’ professionalquality) of the Spanish scientific journals accor-ding to Google Scholar or Academic was publis-hed. Over the period of 2010-2014, the ROMMattained a ranking of 636 with an index H of 7 anda median H of 9. The same authors repeated thestudy including the year 2015, then observed adecrease of the ROMM to position 87, with thesame values of index H and of its median7. Giventhat the H index is calculated based on the distri-bution of the citations received by a researcher’sscientific works, we conclude that the main pro-blem the ROMM now has is that its articles arerarely cited, even by its own authors8.However, analyzing other bibliometric indexesthat assess the quality of journals, regardless of thenumber of citations of their articles, the Universityof Barcelona has developed an application calledInformation Matrix for the Analysis of Journals(MIAR). Based on different data, it calculates eachyear the ICDS (Composite Index of SecondaryDiffusion), which is an indicator that shows thevisibility of a journal in different scientific databa-ses of international scope, or, failing that, in eva-luation repertoires of periodicals9. An elevatedICDS means that the journal is present in differentsources of information of international relevance.In its latest update, of 2018, the ROMM obtainedan ICDS of 9.5 points, out of a possible maximumof 11, having increased this index year after year,as in 2016 it was 9.3 and in 2017, 9.410. Table 1shows some ICDS from journals related to bonemineral metabolism, for comparison.The future of the ROMM: Where are we going?Is there life beyond Medline?The main objective of ROMM’s management andeditorial team and SEIOMM’s board of directors isits inclusion in the Medline database. Journal of Osteoporosis and Mineral Metabolism: its presence in ScopusEDITORIAL / Rev Osteoporos Metab Miner. 2018;10(1):3-65tee’s evaluation, having obtained in 2014 a scoreof 2.5 and in 2017, 2.7 points, with 3 points beingnecessary on a maximum of 5 to pass the cut-offthreshold and be included. We have carefullyanalyzed the report (which was presented at theSEIOMM Assembly last October) and we are wor-king to correct everything that can be improved totry again as soon as possible, which will be fromMay 2019. One of the aspects that we have wor-ked on lately is to improve the Journal web pageand adapt it to the editing formats required bysome databases. Profound changes in the compu-ter program were carried out.Another aspect that we must improve is the Hindex in Google Scholar and the Cite Score inScopus. To attain this, the articles published in theROMM must be cited in other journals, preferablythose that are indexed in the Journal of CitationReports, in other words, those that have an impactfactor. To encourage the authors and achieve thisgoal, the current SEIOMM board of directors, inagreement with the journal’s editorial team, hasestablished the "Support to the SEIOMM Magazine"award sponsored by Rubió Laboratories11.Now, what would happen if the inclusion of theROMM in Medline was delayed for a few years?This scenario, although undesirable, is possible.The criteria applied by the Medline Committee ofExperts are sometimes difficult to understand andtherefore correct. In our opinion, the ROMM isalready included in multiple databases and reposi-tories that ensure its visibility. On the other hand,we also have an external recognition with objecti-ve data on its quality6-10. However, the inclusion inMedline is still one of our goals and we will striveto achieve it.As a conclusion, the SEIOMM has a ContrastQuality Journal that in a relatively short period oftime has been widely disseminated (especially inthe countries of Central and South America), butwhich requires the collaboration and involvementof researchers, and in a very special way those thatare associated with the SEIOMM, because it is theirJournal, which must be materialized by submittingquality articles and citing the Journal’s contents inother scientific publications with an impact factor.Bibliography1.
