La recuperación del importante legado documental y monumental andalusí para la historia de España fue una de las iniciativas más sobresalientes de la arqueología del siglo de las luces. El estudio de las antigüedades árabes de España, apoyado por la Corona desde los tiempos del reinado de Felipe V, fue impulsado por las Reales Academias de la Historia y de Bellas Artes de San Fernando las cuales desarrollaron importantes proyectos científicos, numismáticos, epigráficos y de documentación del arte hispanomusulmán que constituyen el origen del arabismo español y una de las iniciativas más significativas en el conjunto de los estudios orientalistas en la Europa del siglo XVIII.The recovery of the important documental and monumental Andalusí legacy was one of the most outstanding archaeological initiatives of the Age of Enlightenment for the history of Spain. The study of the Arabic antiques of Spain, supported by the Crown since the reign of Philip V, was driven by the Royal Academies of History and Fine Arts of San Fernando, developing important scientific, numismatic, and epigraphic projects, as well as those documenting Spanish Muslim art; all of which make up the origin of Spanish Arabism, and one of the most significant initiatives in the group of orientalist studies in Europe of the 18th century
