In the experiments described in this thesis the role of blood-borne small lymphocytes in maintaining and restoring histological and immunological integrity of Iymphe nodes, spleen and thymus has been investigated with the aid of various irradiation procedures. This investigation was induced by the experiments of Gowans and collaborators on the recirculation of Iymphocytes, i.e. the passage of small lymphocytes from the bloodstream into the lymphoid organs and from these -via Iymphatics (thoracic duct!) -back into the blood. Recirculation of small Iymphocytes has been shown by these investigators to constitute one of the bases of the structural dynamics of lymphoid organs and of the funetional i.e. immunological strategy of the lymphoid system by effecting a continuous redistribution of immunologically competent and immunologically committed lymphocytes. The immunological competence of recireulating thoracic duct lymphocytes has been demonstrated by Gowans et al. (1962, 1963) with respect to specific cellular responses and by MeGregor and Gowans (1963) and Ford, Gowans and MacCullagh (1966) with regard to the antibody response..
