Two strains of Phaeocystis sp., one isolated fromthe Weddell Sea region (Antarctica) and one fromthe North Sea, were compared for their growthcharacteristics and pigmentation during growth inbatch cultures. Experiments were performedstarting with identical nutrient and light conditionsat 2°C, 7°C and 10°C. Division rates rangedfrom 0.17 to 0.94 d -1 depending on strain andtemperature: the Antarctic strain grew fastest at2°C (#=0.71 d-l), the strain from the North Sea at10°C (#=0.94 d-l). Growth phase, phase in the diurnalcycle and temperature influenced the19'hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin to chlorophyll a ratioin both strains. Large differences in this ratio werefound between flagellates and colony cells fromthe same strain. Despite variability within eachstrain, mean levels of 19'hexanoyloxyfucoxanthinwere always higher in the Antarctic strain.Another fucoxanthin-related pigment, 19'butanoyloxyfucoxanthin,showed the same trends duringgrowth as 19'hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin in the Antarcticstrain but was undetectable in the strainisolated from the North Sea. A comparison wasmade with field data collected during thePhaeocystis blooming period in the coastal zoneof the North Sea. During this period relativeamounts of 19'hexanoyloxyfucoanthin as well asthe absence of 19'butanoyloxyfucoxanthinmatched with the results from the North Seastrain in culture. Environmental factors influencepigment content and ratio, yet the two investigatedPhaeocystis strains can be distinguished onthe basis of their pigment characteristics
