Direct dotteren blijft de beste behandeling bij een hartinfarct. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van UMCG-promovendus Saman Rasoul, uitgevoerd in de Isala klinieken te Zwolle. Hij bevestigt hiermee bevindingen van de Zwolse onderzoeksgroep cardiologie uit de jaren 1990, op basis waarvan direct dotteren de eerste keus behandeling werd. Rasoul stelt vast dat de eerder aangetoonde lage sterfte bij direct dotteren bij een hartinfarct ook in de dagelijkse praktijk kan worden waargenomen. De verbetering van behandeling en prognose lijkt vooral te danken aan een betere medicamenteuze behandeling conform de richtlijnen. Rasoul bestudeerde de behandeling en de sterfte van patiënten die in Zwolle waren opgenomen met een hartinfarct tussen 1994 en 2004. Het aantal patiënten per jaar steeg van minder dan 200 patiënten in 1994 tot meer dan 600 patiënten in 2004. In deze periode nam de gemiddelde leeftijd aanzienlijk toe. Het bleek dat het gebruik van in de richtlijnen aanbevolen medicijnen toenam en de duur van de ziekenhuisopname duidelijk afnam. Ook overlijden na een hartinfarct kwam minder vaak voor, zowel tijdens de ziekenhuisopname als het jaar na het infarct
