Alcoholgebruik door adolescenten is een belangrijk maatschappelijk gezondheidsprobleem geworden tijdens het afgelopen decennium. Dit alcoholgebruik hangt samen met verschillende andere problemen, mede daarom is het belangrijk om jongeren met een verhoogd risico op te sporen, als beginpunt voor interventies. Het hoofddoel van dit proefschrift is het opsporen van determinanten voor alcoholgebruik door adolescenten. Ook wordt er gekeken naar determinanten voor cumulatie van riskante gezondheidsgedragingen. Het in dit proefschrift beschreven onderzoek maakt onderdeel uit van de TRAILS (TRacking Adolescents’ Individual Lives Survey) studie. TRAILS is een grootschalig prospectief cohortonderzoek naar de psychische, sociale en lichamelijke ontwikkeling van kinderen op weg naar volwassenheid. Het TRAILS-onderzoek is gestart in 2001 toen de kinderen 10-12 jaar oud waren. De resultaten zoals beschreven in dit proefschrift laten zien dat opvoeding een determinant is voor alcoholgebruik door adolescenten. Daarnaast blijken zelfcontrole, agressief gedrag, alcoholgebruik door vrienden en verschillende sociaal demografische kenmerken voorspellend te zijn. Een lage mate van zelfcontrole verhoogt niet het risico op alcoholgebruik, maar wel op alcoholmisbruik en op cumulatie van riskante gezondheidsgedragingen. Alhoewel sommige aspecten van de opvoedingsstijl van ouders ook alcoholgebruik van de jongere voorspellen, zijn de effecten klein. De resultaten laten zien dat in toekomstig onderzoek naar determinanten van alcoholgebruik door adolescenten een onderscheid gemaakt moet worden tussen specifieke patronen van alcoholgebruik, en dat moet worden gekeken naar de samenhang met andere vormen van gezondheidsgedrag. Dit geldt eveneens voor de ontwikkelen van preventieve interventie programma’s. Verdere versterking van de samenwerking tussen scholen en jeugdgezondheidszorg kan de effectiviteit van deze programma’s vergroten.Alcohol use among adolescents has become a major public health concern over the past decade. This alcohol use is associated with various other problems, therefore it is important to detect at-risk adolescents as a starting point for interventions. The main aim of this thesis is to identify determinants of adolescent alcohol use. Furthermore, determinants of multiple health risk behaviors were studied. The studies described in this thesis were embedded within the TRAILS (TRacking Adolescents’ Individual Lives Survey) study. TRAILS is a large prospective cohort study of the psychological, social and psychical development of children into adulthood. The TRAILS study started in 2001 when the children were aged 10-12 years. The results of this thesis show that parenting is a determinant for adolescent alcohol use. Furthermore, Self-control, aggressive behavior, alcohol use of friends and various socio-demographic characteristics were predictive for alcohol use. Low self-control does not increase the risk of alcohol use, but does increase the risk of alcohol abuse and multiple health risk behaviors. Although some aspects of parenting were found to be predictive for adolescent alcohol use, the effects were small. The results show that in future research on determinants for alcohol use by adolescents a distinction should be made between specific patterns of alcohol use and that the association with other health risk behaviors should be studied. The same holds true for the development of preventive intervention programs. Further increase of the cooperation between schools and Preventive Child Healthcare may increase the efficiency of these programs
