The sea and its varied life both afloat and ashore have always exerted a power­ful fascination for all sorts and conditions of people. Here is a chance to indulge your personal desire to "go to sea" without any of its discomforts, and to view coastline activities which the average person never comes upon. Photographed along the North Atlantic coastline, where the old and the new constantly rub shoulders, the film includes shipbuilding, fishing trips, the light­house service, windjammers and modern ships, famous old New England ports, and many other features. "Americans at Play" Many Americans have discovered that the kind of thing they do to amuse themselves provides more lasting satisfaction than watching somebody else play. The list has grown in recent years until it includes something for every taste. This film includes some of the more picturesque of these activities, such as the annual field meet for ancient automobiles, windjammer cruises on old schooners in Maine waters, an excursion of the Railroad Enthusiasts over the "Hoot Toot, and Whistle" railroad, and some of the more conventional things like camping, country baseball, mountain climbing, a country fair. "Yankees at Work" Building a wooden ship along the Maine coast. In "North Atlantic Coastline." Many Americans still work outdoors, wresting from the earth its many and varied treasures. Some of these occupations and industries have been carried on in much the same way for two or three centuries. This film depicts some of these activities and the spirit of the men who engage in them. It includes such things as a Vermont farmer and his boys making maple syrup; the production of char­coal in a "pit" as it has been done for many years; the Way Down East worm digging industry, and quarrying. A generous portion of the film is devoted to logging, log drives and the lumber camps of Maine. He is the author of The Story of Hill, New Hampshire, and is currently writing a book on high schor' -V ~ation. He has appeared on lecture platforms in most parts of the country. Dan Stiles grew up in a c( ^fjan'l mily in New England, is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University and has done graduate work at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The only member of my family to have sd that distinction is my maternal ancester, John if I enj oy« Rowland, one of the original Pilgrim band, who was assigned by his peers to operate the Pilgrim trading post located somewhere mar the present site of August. According to "Saints and Strangers", John got into some sort of a shooting scrape up there, and never completely lived it down. "Land of Enchantment" grew out of a long standing interest in the Penobscot Bay region, plus the discovery that it had had no recent bock all its own.
