1Greetings from the editors!Welcome to the first edition of Ethnographic Encounters, St Andrews’ new journal for undergraduate Social Anthropologists. The idea of an open platform for student work occurred to both of us in the middle of our time at here at St Andrews, and one year later, thanks to the help of Dr Craig Lind and the OJS team, it has become reality in the form of Ethnographic Encounters.To our minds, undergraduate work in all subjects is underrepresented within the university. Particularly in Social Anthropology, however, whose students put so much of their time, their energy, and their lives into work that is as personal as it is academic, a forum for sharing fieldwork experiences seems long overdue. The journal is our contribution to correcting this imbalance.We were impressed not only with the response to our call for papers for this first issue, but with the diversity of experiences represented in the essays we received, which are filled with humour and personality as well as distinctive insights into a range of topics. In this first issue, we are proud to present the Ethnographic Encounters projects of nine authors.  Francesca Vaghi looks at human-animal sociality in her project on dog-owners in Italy, while Ania Bartkowiak considers public privacy on the New York subway. Closer to home, Sabrina Russo traces her experience of participant observation among the Pagans of Fife; Sophie Patterson investigates the performance and community of pipers in Edinburgh; Brenna Cogswell reflects on thinking through coffee; Elena Georgalla introduces us to Mr Curiosity; and Chelsea Berry analyses the gender division of sport. Armina Dinescu, meanwhile, delves into the negotiation of online identities on ChatRoulette, and finally Michael Melia provides a methodologically-oriented counterbalance with his account of fieldwork in a Dundee meditation centre.We are grateful to Dr Tony Crook and Dr Craig Lind for their hard work and enthusiastic backing, and to Jackie Proven, Janet Aucock, and Alice Crawford for their support. Most of all, our thanks go to everyone who submitted work to us; we read each essay with interest and appreciation, and would gladly have included each and every one in this first edition. Many more fine projects will appear in our second edition; we also look forward to including dissertation sketches, more methodological reflections, and artwork in future. We are thrilled to launch this project, but even more excited to imagine how it will grow and develop through you – readers, writers, and students.Your editors,Zoe Miller and Emily SheppardIn this IssueAims and ScopeEthnographic Encounters is an undergraduate e-journal which provides a platform for the work of the social anthropology students of University of St Andrews. Established in 2011, the e-journal’s main aim is that of publishing research projects conducted by students in their second year of study. Additionally the publication promotes visual and other experimental expressions of ethnographic interest. The e-journal is intended to present the work of the University of St Andrews’ undergraduate, social anthropology students for two main audiences. In the first instance, Ethnographic Encounters presents a valuable resource for future students to draw on the experience and insights of their predecessors.
