The screening,which is free and open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. in theOgeechee Theatre, located in the Student Union on theArmstrong Campus in Savannah.The documentary is the first in a series of three films directedby Atlanta-based journalist Rahiem Shabazz that explore therole education plays on self-image, family structure, financialfreedom and the collective future of the African Americanpopulation in America. “Elementary Genocide: The School toPrison Pipeline” focuses specifically on the social, cultural, political and personal ramifications of how the federalgovernment allots money to each state to build prisons based on the failure rate of fourth and fifth graders.According to Shabazz, the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world. With discussions on how to lessen theprison population, “Elementary Genocide” magnifies various causes for incarceration rates and possible solutionsthat start with the public school system.In an interview with TheSource.com, Shabazz stated, “In order to render a solution to this pressing problem, wemust focus on the youth before they get to prison. We’ve got to start before the first day a child steps foot in akindergarten class. Education must be of paramount concern in every household, parents need to be activelyinvolved in PTA meetings and become school board members.”Following the screening, the College will host a Q&A session with local professionals in the fields of education,juvenile justice and literacy.This screening is a part of the “Education Exposed Film Series” that is taking place on the Armstrong Campus duringthe Spring 2019 semester. Reiber Ph.D., and Nine LineFoundation President Megan Hostler recently signed amemorandum of understanding (MOU) at the ArmstrongCampus’ Sustainable Aquaponics Research Center (SARC).“Signing this MOU exemplifies what Georgia Southernshould be doing, which is working with the community,”Reiber said. “We’re taking what we do very well, which iseducation, and combining it with community need. This,specifically, is a serious community need. It’s an amazingopportunity to advance all of those causes at once.”Aquaponics, or soilless farming, mixes aquaculture, thefarming of fish, and hydroponics, to fuel the growth ofplants in water. The SARC, a 4,100 square-foot greenhouse,has four independent recirculating systems, each containing900-gallon tanks capable of holding more than 100 maturetilapia.Working within the College of Science and Mathematics, the SARC is focused on providing students, faculty andvolunteers with the opportunity to conduct fundamental, interdisciplinary research in the area of aquaponics. Thepartnership with Nine Line Foundation will extend education opportunities to area homeless veterans and providefaculty and students an opportunity to engage with the veterans.“We believe in not giving a handout but a hand up,” Hostler said. “In partnership with the Chatham SavannahAuthority for the Homeless, Nine Line Foundation’s current initiative is to build a portion of their new veterans’village, which will consist of 72 tiny homes and a community center. The veterans in our area will be enrolled in anaquaponics training program with Georgia Southern at a compound at Nine Line Apparel.
