Generational Interaction and Elderly Mortality Risk

Abstract

Influenced by Chinese traditional culture, there are countless connections between China' s elderly and their offspring. But at present, there is a lack of quantitative analysis on the impact of intergenerational interaction on the risk of death in the elderly. Based on the CLHLS 2002-2014 data, this article use frailty Cox survival models to examine the effect of generational interaction to elderly mortality risk. Results show mental and material interactions reduce elderly mortality risk. Comparing to those do not connect each other, those who do it frequently get lower mortality risk. And comparing to those do not have material interaction with each other last year, those who do it get lower mortality risk. Therefore, we should pay attention to generational interaction on elderly death risk.
