In a media competition run by the Institu-tion of Engineering and Technology (IET), we introducedan award-winning design model of financially secure andsustainable automatic fare collection (AFC) [2]. In thepublic transport industry, AFC commonly refers to transitproviders’ automated ticketing systems for collectingfares. We aimed to expand this design model and providea practical training strategy (incorporating AFC subjectknowledge and pedagogic backed training) to answer thechallenge of inter-disciplinary capability in knowledgetransfer for sustaining sustainability within the projectand beyond.MethodsThe designer evaluates and injects components of sustain-ability into the design, which is then commissioned. Pro-ject management frameworks focus on sustainabilityinsertion and growth. Studies on educational psychologyhave charted the ideal knowledge transfer pedagogy [3] forsustaining sustainability, but also highlighted the practicalchallenge of interdisciplinary capability. Case studies onsynergy in the Hong Kong vocational training frameworkand major AFC transport projects validate our practicaltraining strategy.ResultsThis design model does not need to rearrange compo-nents in project management - CMMI [4], PRINCE2 [5] -nor does it introduce any unfamiliar components. Withsuch flexibility, projects other than AFC projects can alsoadopt this model. Identifying tasks that are specific tosustainability and those relating to sustainability in thetask breakdown structure is of paramount importance.Integrating tasks with sustainability and with interlocks intask analysis is the next stage. Designing an interdisciplin-ary pedagogy for complete knowledge transfer will embedsustainability in the system. The synergy of a vocationaltraining provider’s collaboration with an industry partnercan overcome the challenge of interdisciplinary training.The design model not only sustains the AFC system in theproject build but more importantly sustains the injectedsustainability beyond the completion of the project.ConclusionsAbstraction of these ideas is easier to present than it is tounderstand. This paper adopts a problem-solving peda-gogy to make explicit the design philosophy and model ofintegrating sustainability.
