Faculty Senate Index. 166.https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/faculty-senate-index/166Approved by the Senate: 11/16/2011 Not Approved by the Senate: Approved by the President: 12/1/2011 Nor Approved by the President:  Student Grade Appeal (aka Petition to Review/Change a Grade) Policy  10/31/2011  Motion​:    The Academic Standards Committee moves that the Faculty Senate adopt the revised Student Grade Appeal (aka Petition to Review/Change a Grade) Policy below. This revised policy would replace the current language found in section 318 of the Georgia Southern University Faculty Handbook and the “Petition to Review/Change a Grade” entry in the General Academic Information section of the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog.    Rationale​:    At the request of Associate Provost Dr. Kathy Albertson, the Academic Standards Committee reviewed the existing Student Grade Appeal Policy. Associate Provost Albertson asked the committee to suggest alterations to the current policy that would address the prevalence of students taking classes during the summer and the confusion that has arisen about when a grade appeal can and must be initiated. The intention of the Academic Standards Committee was to address these issues while recognizing that a significant proportion of the faculty is employed on nine month contracts, which might inhibit the completion of Stage One of the appeal process during the summer semester. The committee intends for the revised policy to enable students to begin the grade appeal process within a reasonable timeframe, while allowing for the possibility that a faculty member may not be available during the summer and as such would have the opportunity to attend to such a grade appeal during the subsequent fall semester.   Response​:    7. A Motion from the Academic Standards Committee to Revise the Student Grade Appeal Procedure: Rob Yarbrough (COST). This came about because of a request from the Provost’s office regarding confusion about some of the language and especially the timeline. The current policy says the process must start at a certain term and the question was whether or not summer counted as a term. For example, a spring grade appeal was generally passed over until the fall before a student could begin a grade appeal. The proposed change would open up that window during which a student can begin the process while at the same time recognizing that many faculty may not be available during the summer, and so allow for that flexibility of a faculty member not being available during the summer to complete stage one of the process. The motion as read (the text having been posted earlier): “The Academic Standards Committee moves that the Faculty Senate adopt the revised Student Grade Appeal (aka Petition to Review/Change a Grade) Policy below. This revised policy would replace the current language found in section 318 of the Georgia Southern University Faculty Handbook and the ‘Petition to Review/Change a Grade’ entry in the General Academic Information section of the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog.” The motion was Approve​d.  Attachment: ​Student Grade Appeal Policy Motion
