Dialectal gemination in Finnish: Phonetics/phonology interplay in moraic theory

Abstract

This paper presents an account of dialectal gemination processes such as 'primary gemination' (yleisgeminaatio) and 'special gemination' (erikoisgeminaatio) in Finnish dialects. I present an analysis within Moraic Theory whereby gemination of the medial consonant in words of the shape CVCVV is brought about by the additional weight applied by a phonetic process of Second Mora Lengthening "spilling over" onto the onset of the second syllable, causing phonological gemination. This analysis has implications for the role that the phonetics-phonology interface plays in syllable structure and prosody as a whole
