Use of Sub-standard Fuels in the Iron and steel Industry

Abstract

Considering the low reserves of coking coal in India which are confined to the Jharia-Bokaro-Barakar areas, the utilization of non-coking coals for the iron and steel industry assumes great importance. In this paper the problem has been examined from two aspects, i.e. modification in the existing iron-making processes and modification in the conventional coking processes. The recent line of research at the Fuel Research Institute on making metallurgical coke from sub-standard coals like lignite, high volatile non-caking or weakly caking coals by a process of flash heating or extrusion followed by carbonization is indicated
