Living with glaciers : adapting to climate change; the experience of the Illimani project in Bolivia

Abstract

PowerPoint presentationPhotographic evidence shows how rapidly the glaciers are receding. Illimani Glaciers have lost approximately 21% of area from 1963-2009, at 4.4 ha/year. There is a loss in permanent snow thickness from 3.5m to a maximum 35.6m; and at average rates of loss between 7.7 and 77.4 cm/year. With increasing temperatures and changing rainfall patterns, the melting rate will increase and cause devastation to livelihoods for downstream people who rely on glacial water resources. Fragile mountain systems are extremely vulnerable. The presentation reinforces the felt effects of climate change and encourages adaptive methods of agriculture and water conservation
