The Library began as amodest vision in the Articles of Incorporation from June 1891:There would be a reading room with books on hygiene,missions, and other resources necessary for the school. OnDecember 1, 1891, the Seattle Public Library began to realizeits own vision by providing access to some 6,000 books inrented rooms in a Pioneer Square hotel. Although foundersexpected these libraries to grow over time, no one in the1890s imagined how radically library collections, services, andspaces would evolve throughout the coming century. EvenH.G. Wells, whose time-traveling protagonist journeysthousands of years into the future, did not imagine a librarybecoming much more than books in a building.The pace and magnitude of technological change in theSPU Library NumbersIn academic year 2015–16: 255,777entries into the Ames Library.37,427books checked out.194information literacy sessionstaught by librarians.8,915reference, research, andtechnology consultations. A common mistake is toreduce libraries to the function of providing books in rooms —i.e., access to information. If libraries were merely aboutinformation access, the internet and the devices we use toaccess digital networked resources would largely replacethem. But libraries are about much more than informationaccess. A library intentionally selects and mediates access toinformation to enable people to discover and use the bestinformation so that they may grow in knowledge and wisdom.As this year’s Annual Report and previous reports show, theSPU Library continues to evolve in its second century toenable students and scholars to discover, create, and shareknowledge in both traditional and innovative ways. Sinceimplementing a new strategic plan five years ago, we have:increased access to digital content (books, journals,databases, and video);increased librarians’ time for and with students in andbeyond the classroom;created new instructional and scholarship services forfaculty;reorganized service areas to provide greatertechnological support;enhanced learning spaces, equipment, and aestheticsin the Ames Library building;implemented new systems to support the discoveryand use of library resources and services;pursued creative collaborations to improve everydimension of our work.The SPU Library — like all dynamic libraries — will continue toevolve in both expected and unexpected ways. But, like anygood library, this evolution will be shaped by, with, and for thecommunity that generated and sustains us. University Archivist AdrienneMeier will be part of the panel, to talk about the archivalresearch she has done on the early history of SPU. The workof former University Librarian Bryce Nelson on the history ofSeattle will be featured as well.We will announce additional information closer to theevent. Rooted in Mission was featured in the summer issueof Response and SPU’s 125th Anniversary site has additionalinformation about our quasquicentennial. Library Newsletters. 12.https://digitalcommons.spu.edu/library_news/12Friends of the Library NewsletterAutumn 2017SPU Library continues legacy of promoting informationliteracy with digital literacyA recent report from the Pew Research Center, “The Future of Truth andMisinformation Online,” showed experts “evenly split on whether the comingdecade will see a reduction in false and misleading narratives online.” While 51percent of these experts do not expect the information environment to improve,49 percent were more hopeful. Members of this latter group acknowledged that“misinformation and bad actors have always existed but have eventually beenmarginalized by smart people and processes,” and they “believe betterinformation literacy among citizens will enable people to judge the veracity ofmaterial content and eventually raise the tone of discourse.”Librarians have taught information literacy and related content at SPU fordecades and currently teach over 200 class sessions each year. Last year, aspart of the University’s new writing program, librarians began teachingembedded research sessions within disciplinary writing seminars. In addition tolinking writing and research literacies, the Library has been evolving itsinstruction program and services to include digital literacies. New competenciesin information technology literacy, digital participation, and digital scholarshipnow supplement information literacy. And each competency includes attentionto the cultivation of reflective and ethical dispositions. Evaluations of instructionsessions, writing courses, and library programs reveal the relevance ofteaching information and digital literacies for student success and, we believe,holistic flourishing beyond college.Library launches new Information Studies minorAs information and communication technologies (ICTs) continue to change ourlives and world, the study of information is becoming increasingly important. Tofurther respond to the need for more reflective, critical, and ethical engagementwith information and ICTs, the Library will begin offering a minor in InformationStudies next year. Information Studies explores the creation, dynamics,management, and use of information and ICTs and examines the relationshipsbetween people, information, and technology. This new minor provides afoundation for information-related professions, as well as relevant knowledgeand skills for careers in a variety of fields, and will help prepare students tothrive academically, professionally, and spiritually in our information society.This minor, designed to support and supplement related programs in the arts,sciences, and professions, creates a new curricular space at SPU forunderstanding and shaping our present information age. The program consistsof three core courses: “Information and Attention,” which considers the natureof information, attention, and agency; “Digital Literacy and Life,” which exploresthe digital dimension of our lives; and “Information and Society,” a service-learning course examining information challenges in Seattle. The minor alsoincludes electives drawn from other disciplines such as art, computer science,history, and philosophy and an integrative independent research project orinternship. While there are similar programs at other schools, this will be aunique offering for a Christian university.ETM and the Library combine to enhance teaching andlearningLast year the department of Educational Technology and Media (ETM) becamepart of the Library. Bringing together a range of professional skills and programs— instructional design and technologies, instructional services and research,and faculty and student scholarship — this change enables us to integrateprogramming for faculty and students and find innovative ways to advanceteaching, learning, and research at SPU.Last summer, R. John Robertson joined the library faculty as Digital EducationLibrarian to lead ETM. Prior to joining SPU, Robertson was an instructionaldesigner with Oregon State University Ecampus. Robertson’s previousexperience includes working with e-portfolios at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and working with research projects at the Center for Digital LibraryResearch and the Center for Educational Technology and InteroperabilityStandards at the University of Strathclyde. Some of the projects Robertson andhis team are working on this year include faculty development on blendedcourses and online presence, supporting exploration of scholarly blogging andopen educational resources, and providing pedagogical and technologicalsupport for faculty.SPU Library NumbersIn academic year 2016–17:424,077 entries into the Ames Library.31,467 print books checked out.10,093 e-books checked out.240 information literacy sessions taught by librarians.6,889 reference and research consultations.Orbis Cascade Alliance NumbersSPU is one of 39 universities and colleges in the Orbis Cascade Alliance.Combined, there are over 30 million items in Alliance libraries.The Alliance provides access to over 178,000 e-books.SPU patrons checked out 3,997 items from other Alliance libraries.The SPU Library delivered 3,444 items to other Alliance libraries.For more information about the Library in 2016–17, see our annual report.ConnectBecome a Friend of the Library by giving to an endowment that enhances boththe quantity and quality of resources available to SPU students and scholars.  Partnering for New ResourcesCollaboration and digital technologies are two of the mostimportant trends impacting libraries today. New and emergingtechnologies present many challenges and opportunities forlibraries, but new collaborative partnerships enable libraries toimprove as well as evolve collections and services. As one of37 academic libraries in the Orbis Cascade Alliance, whichexists “to advance institutional missions through collaborationand innovation,” the SPU Library is part of a leadingorganization that is discovering new ways to create and sharedigital content and systems.This last summer, with funds generated by the Friends of theLibrary Endowment, the Library was able to subscribe to anew and discounted Alliance Collection Package. Thispackage, anchored by the cross­disciplinary researchtool ProQuest Central, provides members of the SPUSPU Library NumbersIn academic year 2014–15​: 267,818people entered the library.37,412books were checked out.210information literacy sessionswere taught by librarians.10,971reference, research, andtechnology consultations tookplace. Orbis CascadeAlliance NumbersSPU is one of 37 universities andcolleges in the Orbis CascadeAlliance. Combined, there are over 30million items in Alliance libraries.The Alliance provides access toabout 140,000 e­books.SPU patrons checkedout 3,054 items from otherAlliance libraries.Subscribe At the ceremony President Dan Martinand Board Vice Chair Doug Backous thanked the Ameses for allthey have given to Seattle Pacific. University Librarian MichaelPaulus spoke of the history and value of the Library, which hasevolved dynamically over the past 123 years, and UniversityChaplain Bo Lim prayed that the Ames Library would be a place ofaccess to information as well as transformation.In the digital age a library is much more than a building, but a librarybuilding remains an important part and manifestation of what alibrary is for. Like a Gothic cathedral, a library building tells a story ofthe world that was, that is, and that is to come. Every day, students,faculty, and others actively use the Ames Library -- and theinformation resources, technological resources, and humanresources accessible through it -- to interact with that story bydiscovering, creating, and sharing knowledge.It is great honor to have our Library building named after Gary andBarbara Ames, who have done so much to advance the mission ofSeattle Pacific and increase access to an SPU education, especiallyfor high school graduates from traditionally underrepresentedbackgrounds.Revisiting the ArchiveLast March, the Library hosted a well-attended and dynamic panelfor our Annual Friends of the Library event, titled "The Archive ofSeattle Pacific University: A Panel Exploring the Origins of SPU inTime and Place." University Librarian Michael Paulus started the panel with a briefoverview of the history of archives and early Pacific Northwesthistory. Dean of the School of Theology Douglas Strong talked nextabout Wesleyan/Holiness educational institutions. To explore historicalmaterials from the SPU archives, visit the growing collection ofimages and documents available online through the Library’sinstitutional repository, Digital Commons.Digital WisdomIn addition to being an archive (the focus of the Spring 2014 Friendsof the Library Newsletter), which keeps the past present throughmemory, a library functions as a site of present action and futureanticipation. For decades, the SPU Library has been committed toteaching information literacy and research skills to help ourstudents succeed academically and prepare for the future. A fewyears ago, with the creation of the Tech Desk, the Library beganintroducing more technology training and access into our services. Asurvey of undergraduate students conducted earlier this yearvalidated the importance of this service area and identifiedadditional ways we can help students become digitally literate.A foundational literacy we have been discussing is an ancient one:attention. With new digital technologies providing us with so muchinformation -- and too much of the present -- it is increasingly difficultto focus on immediate goals and sustain narratives that link ourpast experiences with our future plans. But if we cultivate our abilityto focus on what is most important among all the stimuli with whichwe are presented, and connect these with a narrative that givescoherence to our lives, we will be better prepared to use newtechnologies wisely. Libraries' collections, spaces, and services have been transformedby digital technologies in impressive ways, and all of these changeshave enhanced teaching, learning, and scholarship.
