Tourism Secretariat Signs Accords With American
Automobile Association To Assist U.S. Tourists Traveling To
Mexico

On June 8, the Tourism Secretariat (Secretaria de Turismo, SECTUR) and the American Automobile
Association (AAA) formalized a series of agreements designed to facilitate travel for US tourists
visiting Mexico by car. Under the agreements, signed in Washington, AAA will provide the
necessary forms and paperwork, including tourist cards, for members traveling to Mexico. The
AAA will also provide extensive information on lodging and dining facilities, as well as prevailing
highway conditions. According to Tourism Secretary Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, as many as 300,000
US tourists are expected to enter Mexico by road in 1993, compared with 250,000 in 1992 and 70,000
in 1991. Coldwell said the government is attempting to accommodate the increased number of US
visitors through extensive improvements on 4,000 km. of highways and roads. (Source: La Jornada,
