Dynam-ics of water currents are linked to morphology of the sea floor. Traditionally water depth data are collected withdifferent sonar types installed on a boat; this kind of collection techniques provide point data. Recently SatelliteDerived Bathymetry (SDB) techniques became an option for the study of sea-floor erosion in shallow water. Corre-lation between reflectance (penetration) with depth allows to reconstruct a 2.5 dimensional model of the sea floor.Knowledge on the accuracy of these methods is important to understand their applicability.In this work the relationship between reflectance from Sentinel-2 visible optical bands and water depth is inves-tigated. Around 15000 points with depth values have been collected in Cesenatico area (Forlì-Cesena, Italy). Therelationship between Sentinel-2 bands reflectance values and measured data were tested using different approaches.Initial results show that using bands 2, 3 and 4 (visible wavelength) as dependent variables allow non-linear modelsto provide an overall correlation of R2B02: 0.665, R2B03: 0.769 and R2B04:0.840. The distribution of residuals showsstable sigma values around 0.4 m until 2.5 m depth. Deeper waters, from 2.5 m to 5 m (maximum measured depth),were predicted with residuals that increase linearly from 0.4 to 2.3 m. Considering the spatial resolution of Sentinel2 visible bands (10m x 10m) further analysis of imagery with higher resolution will be carried out to assess thesuitability of using drones and aircrafts for estimating sea floor depth. Finally different 3D models of the seabed ofthe area of analysis are reconstructed, in order to make a comparison between the different analysis performed.In the future it will be important to test the potential of Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB) with high resolutionsatellite images and of closer-range sensors with different conditions (for example different areas with differentwater turbidity), to evaluate the best use-cases.
