The paper relates classical treatments of physics and metaphysics to
contemporary work on common sense in the field of artificial
intelligence (J. Hobbs, P. Hayes, et al.). It defends the universality
(and truth) of certain basic principles of common-sense physics and
shows why these basic principles must leave certain issues
undetermined
